## What it is

The AI Editor has one list of keyboard shortcuts for playback, editing, the timeline, saving and exporting. You can read the list in the editor, change any key, or switch to a preset that feels like another editor.

## Who can use it

Everyone. The app does not check your plan for shortcuts. Your changes are saved in your browser, so they stay on that device and browser.

## Cost

Free, no credits.

## Where to find it

Open a project in the **AI Editor** and press ? (Shift and /). The **Keyboard Shortcuts** window opens. Press ? again to close it. The app has no button that opens this window, only the key.

The numbers match the screenshot of the **Keyboard Shortcuts** window.

| # | Name in the app | What it does | Plan |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 1 | Keyboard Shortcuts | The window title. The line under it reads "Find shortcuts, choose a preset, or customize your keys." | Both |
| 2 | Search shortcuts | A search box. It matches the name or the description of a shortcut. | Both |
| 3 | Default | The preset button. It shows the name of the preset in use. Click it to pick another. | Both |
| 4 | Reset All | Puts every key back to its default and returns to **Default**. | Both |
| 5 | Shortcut category | Tabs: **All**, **Playback**, **Editing**, **Selection**, **Timeline**, **View**, **File** and **Tools**. | Both |
| 6 | Key button | Each row ends with its key. Click it to change the key. | Both |
| | Press keys... | The box that replaces the key button while you set a new key. | Both |
| | Reset to default | A small arrow that shows when you hover a row whose key you changed. | Both |
| | No shortcuts found | Shows when the search and the tab match nothing. | Both |

## How to see the shortcuts

1. Click in the editor, away from any text box.
2. Press ?.
3. Pick a tab, or type in **Search shortcuts**.
4. Press Esc to close the window.

## How to change a key

1. Open **Keyboard Shortcuts** with ?.
2. Click the key button at the end of the row. The box says **Press keys...**.
3. Press the new key or key combination. It saves at once.
4. Press Esc instead to cancel.
5. To undo your change, hover the row and choose **Reset to default**, or choose **Reset All**.

Cmd and Ctrl count as the same key, so a key you set with Cmd also works with Ctrl. Two shortcuts cannot share a key. If you try, the window says "This shortcut is used by (name). Choose a different key."

## How to use a preset

1. Open **Keyboard Shortcuts**.
2. Click the preset button, which reads **Default** at first.
3. Pick one: **Default**, **CapCut**, **Adobe Premiere**, **Final Cut Pro** or **DaVinci Resolve**.
4. The window applies it right away. The current preset is highlighted.

## The shortcuts

Mac key names first, then Windows. On Windows the Cmd key is Ctrl. The delete shortcuts answer to both the Delete and the Backspace key.

## Options explained

**What each preset changes.** A preset starts from the defaults and changes only a few keys.

| Preset | What it changes |
| --- | --- |
| Default | Nothing. These are the keys above. |
| CapCut | **Split** is Cmd or Ctrl + B. |
| Adobe Premiere | **Split** is Cmd or Ctrl + K. This is the same key that opens the search box, so the search box may open instead. |
| Final Cut Pro | **Split** is Cmd or Ctrl + B. **Trim Start** is [ and **Trim End** is ]. **Previous Clip** and **Next Clip** move to Alt + [ and Alt + ]. |
| DaVinci Resolve | **Split** is Cmd or Ctrl + \. **Ripple Delete** is Shift + Backspace. |

**Holding a key.** If you hold a key down, only these repeat: frame, second and 5 second moves, **Previous Clip**, **Next Clip**, **Zoom In** and **Zoom Out**. Edits, playback toggles and markers fire once.

**Where shortcuts do not work.** They are ignored while you type in a text box, menu, slider or list, and while a dialog is open. When a button or tab has focus, Space and Enter work on that button, and the arrow keys, Home and End work on the control instead.

**Which clips change.** Edit shortcuts skip clips on locked rows. **Split**, **Trim Start** and **Trim End** act on the selected clips under the playhead. **Paste** goes to the row of your selection, or the first unlocked row.

## Limits

- Each key can belong to one shortcut. The window refuses a key that is already used.
- Changes are kept in this browser only. A different browser or device starts from the default.
- The jump keys move 5 seconds.

## When something goes wrong

| Message in the app | What it means | What to do |
| --- | --- | --- |
| This shortcut is used by (name). Choose a different key. | The key you pressed already belongs to another shortcut. | Press a different key, or change the other shortcut first. |
| The default key is used by (name). Change that shortcut first or reset all shortcuts. | You chose **Reset to default**, but another shortcut now has that key. | Change the other shortcut, or choose **Reset All**. |
| No shortcuts found | Nothing matches your search and tab. | Clear **Search shortcuts** and choose **All**. |
| Could not save project | **Save** could not finish. The line under it gives the reason, or "Please try again." | Try again. |
| (Action) failed | A shortcut edit such as **Paste clips** or **Split clips** failed. | Try again, or use **Undo**. |

## Questions

### Why does pressing a key do nothing?

You may be typing in a box, have a dialog open, or the clip is on a locked row. Click an empty part of the editor and try again.

### Is there a Mac and a Windows difference?

Only the key names. Cmd on Mac is Ctrl on Windows. The window shows the symbols for your computer.

### How do I get my usual editor keys?

Open **Keyboard Shortcuts**, click the preset button and pick **CapCut**, **Adobe Premiere**, **Final Cut Pro** or **DaVinci Resolve**.

### Why are Cut and Copy different from the buttons on the timeline?

The timeline button named **Cut** splits a clip, like **Split** (S). The key Cmd or Ctrl + X cuts selected clips to the clipboard. The timeline button named **Copy** makes a copy now, like **Duplicate**, while Cmd or Ctrl + C copies to the clipboard. See [timeline](/docs/ai-editor/timeline).

### Can I turn shortcuts off?

Not with one switch. You can change any key, but each shortcut keeps a key.

### How do I get back to the defaults?

Choose **Reset All** in the **Keyboard Shortcuts** window.
