## What it is

**Share** makes a link to a read only copy of a chat. You can also rename a chat, move it into a project, branch it, and delete it.

## Who can use it

Everyone. The code does not limit sharing or deleting by plan.

## Cost

Free, no credits. Sharing, renaming, branching and deleting never use credits.

## Where to find it

- **Share**: top right of an open chat. It shows once the chat has a message.
- Rename, move and delete: the three dots next to a chat in the chat sidebar, or the chat name at the top of the chat.

## Buttons and controls

<!-- shot: chat/share-and-delete -->

| # | Name in the app | What it does | Plan |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| | (chat name) | The name at the top of the chat. Click it for a menu with **Rename** and **Delete**. | Both |
| 1 | Share | Creates a share link and copies it. A window opens with the link. | Both |
| 2 | Copy link | In the share window. Copies the link again. It then reads **Copied**. | Both |
| | More options for (chat name) | The three dots on a chat row in the sidebar. Shows when you hover. Opens **Rename**, **Add to project** or **Move to project**, and **Delete**. | Both |
| | Rename | Lets you type a new name. Enter saves, Esc cancels. You can also double click a chat title. | Both |
| | Delete | Deletes the chat after you confirm. | Both |
| | Branch to new chat | Under a reply. Copies the chat up to that message into a new chat. | Both |

On the page people open from your link:

| # | Name in the app | What it does | Plan |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| | Shared chat, read only | A tag at the top. | Everyone with the link |
| | Continue this chat | Copies the chat into the reader's own account so they can keep going. The original stays unchanged. | Needs sign in |

## How to share a chat

1. Open the chat. Send at least one message first.
2. Click **Share**. The link is created and copied for you.
3. The window says "Anyone with the link can read this chat and continue it in their own copy. Messages you send after sharing are not included."
4. Click **Copy link** to copy it again, then send it to people.

## How to continue a shared chat

1. Open the link.
2. Read the chat. Research cards, sources and documents show as they were.
3. Click **Continue this chat**. Your own copy opens, and your replies go into it.

## How to rename a chat

1. Double click the chat title, or open the three dots and click **Rename**.
2. Type the new name and press Enter.

## How to delete a chat

1. Open the three dots next to the chat and click **Delete**. Or click the chat name at the top and choose **Delete**.
2. Confirm "Delete this chat? This can't be undone."
3. A reply that was still being written is stopped.

## How to branch a chat

1. Under a reply, click **Branch to new chat**.
2. A new chat opens with the conversation up to that message. The original is unchanged.

## Options explained

**What a share link holds.** A copy of the chat at the moment you clicked **Share**. Replies that failed are left out. Messages you send later are not included. Click **Share** again to make a newer copy.

**Who can open it.** Anyone with the link, without signing in. They cannot edit your chat. Treat the link as public: anyone you give it to can pass it on.

**Stopping a share.** The app has no button to turn a link off. To remove one, delete the chat: the shared copy is deleted with it.

**Delete and projects.** Deleting a chat in a project removes only that chat. Deleting a whole project removes all its chats. See [chat projects](/docs/chat/chat-projects).

## Limits

- A chat name can be up to 120 characters.
- Share needs a saved chat, so send a message first.

## Questions

### Can I undo a delete?

No. A deleted chat cannot be brought back.

### Does deleting a chat delete its documents?

Yes. Artifacts live with the chat they came from. Save the file with **Export** first if you need it.

### Will people see my Brand Brain or memories if I share?

No. A share holds the messages, research cards, sources and documents of that chat. It does not hold your memories or Brand Brain.

### Can I share only part of a chat?

Not directly. Use **Branch to new chat** on the message you want to stop at, then share the new chat.

### Why does my shared copy miss my newest messages?

A share is a copy from the moment you clicked **Share**. Click **Share** again for a new link.

### Do I lose credits when I delete chats?

No. Credits are used when a reply is made, not kept in the chat.
