What Is a Brand Lift Study? Definition, Method and When It's Worth It

A brand lift study is a measurement test that compares survey responses, such as ad recall, awareness or purchase consideration, between people who were shown your ads and a comparable group who were not. The difference between the two groups is the estimated lift caused by the advertising.

The core mechanism is a controlled comparison (see what-is-a-control-group-in-ad-testing). A platform or research vendor splits eligible users into an exposed group and a held-out group, then asks both a short survey, for example whether they recognise your brand or would consider buying from it. If the exposed group answers more favourably, the gap is reported as lift. Major ad platforms offer their own versions, but eligibility rules, minimum budgets and survey formats vary. [NEEDS VERIFICATION: confirm current minimum spend and availability per platform before citing thresholds.]

Brand lift is aimed at upper-funnel goals (see what-is-a-funnel-stage) where clicks and purchases are a poor signal, because the point of the ad is to be remembered rather than to trigger an immediate action. It answers a different question from ROAS or CPA: not 'did this ad drive a sale this week' but 'did this ad change what people think of us'.

There are practical limits. Studies need enough exposed users to reach statistically meaningful results, survey responses are self-reported, and a lift in recall does not prove future revenue. For a small team spending modestly, a formal study is often out of reach, and simpler proxies such as branded search volume or direct traffic trends are used alongside it, with the usual caveats about attribution.

Why it matters

Infinall AI does not run brand lift studies, buy media, or measure ad exposure; it produces research, strategy, ad copy and creative from a product URL, which land in an Approval Queue for you to edit and approve before export. The link is on the creative side: if you plan to test whether a campaign shifts awareness, you need clearly different, reviewed creative variants to test, and Infinall can draft those. Measuring the result happens in your ad platform or with a research partner. Most early-stage founders will not have the budget for a formal study, so treat this as a term to understand rather than a default step.

Frequently asked questions

What does a brand lift study measure?

It typically measures survey-based outcomes such as ad recall, brand awareness, favourability and purchase consideration. It compares people who saw the ads with a similar group who did not. It does not directly measure sales, so it is best read alongside conversion data rather than instead of it.

Can a small business run a brand lift study?

Often not through the platforms, because they usually require a meaningful budget and audience size to produce reliable results. A smaller team can approximate the idea by tracking branded search and direct traffic around a campaign, though these are indirect signals and are affected by other factors.
