What Is a Call to Action (CTA)? Definition, Examples and Best Practice

A call to action (CTA) is the specific instruction in an ad, page or message that tells the audience what to do next, usually as a button or short phrase such as 'Start free trial', 'Shop now' or 'Download the guide'.

A CTA connects interest to a next step. In an ad it often appears twice: as the platform's button (Learn more, Sign up, Shop now, chosen from a fixed list) and as wording inside the copy or image. On a landing page it is the button or form that carries the visitor toward the single outcome the page exists for (see what-is-a-landing-page-vs-homepage).

A useful CTA is specific about the action and honest about what happens next. 'Start free' sets a different expectation from 'Book a demo', and each suits a different stage of awareness (see what-is-a-funnel-stage). Mismatches cause trouble: asking a cold audience to buy immediately, or promising 'free' when a card is required, tends to hurt trust and can break platform advertising rules.

CTAs are tested like any other element. Change only the wording, colour or placement, split traffic, and compare (see what-is-ab-testing-for-ads). Small wording changes can matter, but results depend on audience and offer, so there is no universal best phrase and any claim otherwise should be treated sceptically.

Why it matters

Infinall AI drafts ad copy and creative, including CTA wording and the on-image text that goes with it, from a product URL. Everything lands in an Approval Queue where you edit and approve before export. Infinall does not build or host your landing page, does not place or run the ads, and does not guarantee a given CTA will convert. You still pick the platform button and make sure the destination delivers what the CTA promises. Its practical value is producing several reviewed CTA and copy variants quickly so you have something real to test.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a good call to action?

A good CTA names one clear action, matches the audience's readiness, and is truthful about what follows. 'Start free trial' works when a trial exists and needs no surprise payment step. If the next step is heavy, such as a sales call, a softer CTA earlier in the journey often fits better.

How many CTAs should an ad or page have?

Aim for one primary action per ad or landing page. Secondary links can exist, but competing buttons dilute the message and make results harder to interpret. Repeating the same CTA in several places on a long page is fine because it is still one action.
