What Is a Deep Link in App Marketing? Definition and How It Works

A deep link is a link that opens a specific screen or piece of content inside a mobile app, such as a product page or a sign-up flow, instead of only launching the app's home screen or sending the user to an app store listing.

A basic app ad sends people to the app store. A deep link goes further: if the app is installed, tapping it opens the exact destination, for example a discounted item or an invite screen. Deferred deep links handle the case where the app is not installed yet by sending the user to the store, then opening the intended screen after the first launch. Implementation uses mechanisms such as URI schemes, and Universal Links on iOS and App Links on Android, usually supported by an attribution or linking provider. [NEEDS VERIFICATION: confirm current platform link mechanisms and provider options.]

The benefit is continuity. An ad promising a specific feature or offer that lands on a generic home screen loses people at the first step. Matching the ad's promise to the destination screen is the app equivalent of pairing an ad with a dedicated landing page (see what-is-a-landing-page-vs-homepage).

Deep links also support measurement, since links can carry campaign parameters so installs and in-app actions can be attributed to the source. Setup needs developer work in the app, and links should be tested on both installed and not-installed cases and across operating systems, since broken links are a common cause of wasted spend.

Why it matters

Infinall AI does not build deep links, instrument your app, run attribution or place app-install ads. It is useful on the creative side: for mobile app developers, it drafts research, strategy, ad copy, image ads, carousels and video drafts from a product URL or store page, landing in an Approval Queue for you to edit and approve before export. Your developers then decide where each ad's tap should land and implement the link. Writing a specific ad message is worthwhile mainly when there is a matching screen to send people to.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a deep link and a regular link?

A regular link opens a web page or an app store listing. A deep link opens a specific location inside an installed app. A deferred deep link also works when the app is not installed, by routing through the store and opening the target screen on first launch.

Do I need deep links to run app install ads?

No. Install ads can send people to the store listing without them. Deep links become valuable when you want to send people to a particular screen, run re-engagement campaigns for existing users, or attribute in-app actions to a campaign, and they require developer setup.
