What Is a Lead Magnet? Definition, Types and Examples

A lead magnet is a free, useful resource, such as a checklist, template, guide or short video, that you give someone in exchange for their email address or other contact details. Its job is to start a relationship with a prospect before they are ready to buy.

Common types include checklists, templates, swipe files, short email courses, calculators, free trials or samples, and recorded or live workshops. What they share is a narrow promise: a good lead magnet solves one specific problem quickly, rather than summarising everything you know. A broad ebook titled with your whole category usually attracts people who are not close to buying.

The magnet only works if it attracts the right people. A giveaway that appeals to anyone produces a large list of contacts who never buy, and a large list can look healthy while being worthless. Tie the topic to the problem your paid product solves, so that someone who wants the magnet is plausibly a customer later. Your ICP (see what-is-an-icp) is the test: would your ideal customer want this?

Once the magnet exists, the surrounding pieces matter as much as the file itself: a landing page that states the promise (see what-is-a-landing-page-for-saas), a short follow-up email sequence, and a clear next step. Track cost per lead (see what-is-cpl) alongside how many of those leads become customers, because cost per lead on its own can reward the wrong magnet.

Why it matters

Infinall AI turns a product URL into research, strategy, ad copy and creative that land in an Approval Queue for you to review before export. If you already have a lead magnet, Infinall can draft the image ads, carousels and copy that promote it, which you edit or approve before use. It does not build the magnet itself, host the landing page or send the follow-up emails, and it does not buy media or manage live ad spend. Choosing what to offer, and judging whether the leads it brings in are any good, remain your decisions.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a good lead magnet?

It solves one specific problem the reader already has, delivers a result quickly, and is clearly connected to what you sell. A narrow checklist or template usually outperforms a broad guide, because it attracts people with a real, near-term need. Judge it by how many leads become customers, not only by how many sign up.

Should I run ads to a lead magnet?

It can work when your offer is priced too high for cold traffic to buy directly, since a free resource lowers the barrier to a first conversion. The risk is paying for leads who never buy. Start with a small budget, compare cost per lead with how many leads reach a sale, and stop if the magnet attracts the wrong audience.
