What Is a Media Buy? Definition, Types and How It Differs From Creative

A media buy is the purchase of advertising inventory, such as ad impressions, clicks or placements, from a platform or publisher. It covers choosing where ads run, who sees them, how much to bid or pay, and for how long.

Media can be bought in several ways. On self-serve platforms such as Meta, Google, TikTok or LinkedIn, an advertiser sets a budget, audience and bid in an ads manager and pays by auction. Direct buys are negotiated with a publisher, newsletter or podcast for a fixed placement or sponsorship. Programmatic buying uses software to purchase display or video inventory across many sites. Pricing models include cost per thousand impressions (see what-is-cpm), cost per click (see what-is-cpc) and flat fees.

A media buy is a different job from making the ad. The buy covers audience, placement, budget, bidding and pacing, and the ongoing optimisation of those settings. The creative, meaning the images, video and copy, is what the buy puts in front of people. Weak creative wastes a good buy, and a careful buy cannot rescue an ad nobody wants to click, so the two are tested together (see what-is-ab-testing-for-ads).

Small teams usually run their own buys in the platform's ads manager. Agencies and in-house specialists take over when budgets, account counts or channel complexity grow. Whichever route you take, judge results against your own margin and acquisition cost (see what-is-roas and what-is-cac), not against another advertiser's numbers.

Why it matters

Infinall AI does not do media buying. It turns a product URL into research, strategy, ad copy and creative that land in an Approval Queue for you to review before export, so it covers the creative side. It does not set budgets, bid, choose audiences in your ad account or manage live ad spend. You (or a specialist) still make the buy in the ad platform, using the approved assets you exported. Infinall has an optional paid Distribution feature for publishing content, but that is separate from planning and optimising a paid media buy.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a media buy and ad creative?

A media buy is the purchase of ad space and the decisions around it: audience, placement, budget and bidding. Ad creative is the image, video and copy that appears in that space. Both affect results, which is why they are usually tested together rather than separately.

Do I need a media buyer to run ads?

Not at small budgets. Most platforms let you set up campaigns yourself in their ads manager. A dedicated media buyer or agency becomes more useful as spend, channels or the number of accounts grow, because the optimisation work then takes real time. Decide based on how much of your attention the buying consumes.
