What Is a Tripwire Offer? Definition, Examples and When It Backfires
A tripwire offer is a low-priced product sold right after someone joins your list or visits your page, designed to convert a lead into a paying customer rather than to make a profit. The first purchase matters more than the margin on it.
The logic is behavioural: someone who has paid you anything, even a small amount, is far more likely to buy again than someone who has only subscribed. So a tripwire is typically a template pack, mini-course, checklist bundle or first-box discount priced low enough to need little deliberation, and it is usually followed by a higher-priced core offer.
A good tripwire is useful on its own, closely related to the main product, and quick to consume. A bad one is a random discounted item that attracts bargain hunters who never buy anything else. Because it is meant to break even or lose a little, it only works if a meaningful share of buyers go on to buy the core offer, which you can only know by tracking the sequence in your own checkout and email tools.
Tripwires sit in the middle of a marketing funnel (see what-is-a-marketing-funnel). They are also a way to lower your effective cost per customer: if the tripwire revenue covers part of your ad cost, the paid acquisition of the core customer gets cheaper (see what-is-cac). The risk is margin: if tripwire buyers do not upgrade, you have spent ad money to acquire low-value customers.
Why it matters
Infinall AI turns a product URL into research, strategy, ad copy and creative that land in an Approval Queue for you to review before export. If you sell a template pack, mini-course or starter bundle, you can point Infinall at that page and get drafted ad angles and image or carousel creative for it. Infinall does not host your checkout, run your upsell flow or measure how many tripwire buyers convert to the core offer, and it does not buy media. Whether the tripwire price is right is something you test with your own data.

Frequently asked questions
How much should a tripwire offer cost?
There is no universal price. It should be low enough that buying needs little thought for your audience, and high enough to filter out people who would never buy again. Test two or three price points and judge them by how many buyers go on to purchase your core offer, not by tripwire revenue alone.
Is a tripwire offer the same as a lead magnet?
No. A lead magnet is free and trades value for an email address. A tripwire is paid, which makes the buyer a customer rather than a lead. Many funnels use both: a free lead magnet first, then a tripwire offer in the follow-up emails.
