What Is Ad Spend? Definition, What It Includes and How to Budget

Ad spend is the amount of money you pay to ad platforms and publishers to show your ads over a given period. It is the media cost only, not the cost of creating the ads or the tools and people involved.

Ad spend is what the platform bills you: the sum of clicks or impressions you paid for on Meta, Google, TikTok, LinkedIn or similar. It is typically reported per campaign, per day and per account. It does not include creative production, software subscriptions, agency fees or the cost of a freelancer, which together form your wider marketing cost.

Spend is meaningful only next to what it produced. Ratios such as ROAS (see what-is-roas) and CAC (see what-is-cac) divide results by ad spend, so how you count it matters. Include or exclude the same items every time, otherwise your trend lines will mislead you. Daily and lifetime budgets, bid strategies and the learning period of each platform all affect how quickly spend is used.

A sensible starting budget is one that can buy enough conversions to learn from. Spreading a small budget across many campaigns and ad variants leaves each one with too little data. Creative that tires out (see what-is-ad-fatigue) also raises the cost of each result, so ad spend is partly a function of how often you refresh what people see.

Why it matters

Infinall AI turns a product URL into competitor research, strategy, ad copy and creative that land in an Approval Queue for you to review before export. Infinall does not buy media and does not manage live ad spend: the money you pay Meta or Google stays in your ad accounts and under your control. Infinall's credits (1 credit = $0.01 of AI compute) cover the cost of generating creative, not the cost of showing it. Infinall sits on the production side, helping reduce what it costs to make the ads you will then spend on.

Frequently asked questions

Does ad spend include creative and agency costs?

Strictly, no. Ad spend is the media cost billed by the platform. Creative production, tools and agency fees are separate marketing costs. Some teams track a blended figure that includes them, which is fine as long as you label it clearly and use it consistently.

How much should I spend on ads?

There is no universal figure. Work backwards from how much you can afford to pay for a customer given your margins (see what-is-cac), then set a budget large enough to produce enough conversions to learn from. A budget too small to generate any measurable results mostly teaches you nothing.
