What Is Agency Margin on Ad Spend? Fee Models Explained

Agency margin on ad spend is the portion of a client's media budget that an agency earns as revenue, usually as a percentage of spend or a markup, rather than as a separate flat fee. The remainder goes to the ad platform.

Agencies that manage paid media are commonly paid in one of four ways: a percentage of ad spend, a flat monthly retainer, a performance-linked fee, or a markup where the agency buys media and resells it at a higher price. A percentage-of-spend model gives the agency more revenue as budgets rise, which can align or conflict with the client's interests depending on whether spend is actually improving results.

The margin is not necessarily a cost to the client on top of the ad spend. In a percentage model, the fee is billed separately; in a markup or reseller model, the client may see one combined figure, which makes the agency's cut harder to see. Clients should ask whether the ad accounts are in their own name, whether platform invoices are visible and how the fee is calculated, so they can compare true media cost against what they are charged.

For the agency, margin on spend must still cover the labour of strategy, creative production and reporting. Creative production is often the part that scales worst, because each new client or variant needs people. Reducing the cost of creative work is one way agencies protect margin without raising fees (see what-is-ad-spend).

Why it matters

Infinall AI turns a product URL into competitor research, strategy, ad copy and creative that land in an Approval Queue for you to review before export, and it serves agencies working with digital product clients. It does not buy media or manage live ad spend, so it does not touch your media margin or markup. Where it can help is the labour side: drafting research, copy and creative faster so a team spends fewer hours on first drafts. Pro is $30/month with 5 users. Final review, client approval and the commercial terms stay with you.

Frequently asked questions

What is a typical agency fee on ad spend?

Fee structures and rates vary by agency size, service scope and budget, so quoting one number would be misleading. [NEEDS VERIFICATION: a sourced range if one is wanted]. Compare proposals by what is included, such as creative, reporting and account management, not just the percentage.

How can I check what an agency is really charging me?

Ask that ad accounts be created in your own name so you can see the platform's invoices directly, and compare them with what the agency bills you. Ask whether any markup, reseller discount or platform rebate applies. Clear contracts usually state how media costs and fees are separated.
