What Is D7 Retention? Definition, Formula and How to Read It

D7 retention is the percentage of users who open an app on day 7 after they installed it, counting the install day as day 0. It shows whether new users are still coming back a week later, which is a stronger signal of fit than the install itself.

The formula is D7 retention = users active on day 7 ÷ users who installed on day 0. If 1,000 users install on Monday and 150 open the app the following Monday, D7 retention for that cohort is 15%. Teams define 'active' differently (any open, or a meaningful action), so state the definition and keep it consistent.

D7 sits between day-1 retention (see what-is-day-1-retention), which reflects the first experience and onboarding, and later marks such as day 30. Because retention curves usually drop fastest early, D7 shows whether a user found enough value to form a habit. It is also a practical way to compare acquisition sources: two campaigns with the same CPI (see what-is-cpi-cost-per-install) can have very different D7 retention.

Read it by cohort and by source rather than as one blended number. Day-7 retention can be an exact-day measure or a 'returned on or after day 7' measure, which gives different values, so check which one your analytics tool uses. Small cohorts produce noisy results, so avoid conclusions from a few hundred users.

Why it matters

D7 retention is how you find out whether the installs your ads bring are worth buying. Infinall AI helps on the creative side: from a product URL it produces research, strategy, ad copy and creative that land in an Approval Queue for you to edit and approve before export, and different hooks and promises can attract different kinds of users. It does not run install campaigns, measure retention or connect to your analytics or attribution tools, and it does not buy media. Use your own app analytics to compare D7 by campaign and creative, then draft new variants based on what retained.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good D7 retention rate?

It varies a great deal by app category, region and traffic source, so there is no single target worth quoting. Compare your own cohorts over time and across campaigns, and judge it against how long users need to stay to be profitable under your monetisation model.

How is D7 retention different from D1 retention?

D1 measures whether users return the day after install and mostly reflects first-run experience. D7 measures whether they are still active a week later and reflects whether the app delivered enough value to build a habit. Looking at both shows where users drop off.
