What Is Interest-Based Targeting? How It Works and Where It Falls Short
Interest-based targeting is a way of choosing who sees your ads based on topics a platform infers a person cares about, drawn from their activity such as pages followed, content engaged with and searches made. You pick interest categories and the platform finds matching people.
Ad platforms build interest categories from signals like follows, likes, video views and browsing within their own ecosystem. When you select interests such as 'running' or 'project management', the platform shows your ad to people it has assigned to those categories. It is a common starting point for cold audiences because it needs no data of your own.
It differs from contextual targeting (see what-is-contextual-targeting), which looks at the content being viewed, and from custom or lookalike audiences (see what-is-a-custom-audience and what-is-a-lookalike-audience), which are built from your customer data. Interests are inferred, so they are approximate: someone who follows a topic is not necessarily a buyer. Platforms have also been narrowing or removing some detailed targeting options over time, so available categories change.
A practical approach is to test a few distinct interest groups with the same creative, compare cost per result, and then narrow or move toward broader targeting where the platform's own optimisation does more of the work. Interests are best read as hypotheses about your buyer, to be confirmed by results.
Why it matters
Choosing interests means having a clear picture of your buyer, which is where Infinall AI's research stage helps. From a product URL it researches the market and competitors, then builds strategy, ad copy and creative that land in an Approval Queue for you to review before export, and the output can suggest audience angles worth testing. It does not set up targeting, buy media, or manage live spend in your ad accounts, so interest selection and testing happen in the ad platform. Treat its audience suggestions as starting hypotheses, not confirmed segments.

Frequently asked questions
Are interest targets accurate?
They are approximations. Platforms infer interests from behaviour, so people in a category are more likely, not certain, to be relevant to your product. Test several interest groups with the same creative and judge them by cost per result rather than assuming the label equals buying intent.
Should I use narrow interests or broad targeting?
Both are reasonable depending on budget and the platform's optimisation. Narrow interests can help when you have little data, while broad targeting lets the platform's delivery system find buyers once it has conversion data. Test the two against each other in your own account.
