What Is Share of Voice? Definition, Ways to Measure It and Limits

Share of voice (SOV) is the portion of total visibility in a market or category that your brand holds compared with competitors, expressed as a percentage. Depending on context, visibility can mean ad impressions, ad spend, search presence or social mentions.

The basic formula is SOV = your visibility ÷ total visibility for your set of competitors. If your brand accounts for 200 of 1,000 measured mentions, SOV is 20%. The measure matters as much as the formula: paid SOV compares ad impressions or spend, search SOV compares ranking or impression share for chosen keywords, and social SOV compares mentions or engagement.

The definition of the competitive set changes the answer, so state who is included. Also be wary of data quality: you usually cannot see competitors' true ad spend, so estimates come from third-party tools or public ad libraries and are approximate. Platform tools such as impression share in search ads give a precise view of one channel only.

SOV is usually discussed alongside market share, on the idea that brands with a share of voice above their market share tend to grow, but this is a heuristic, not a guarantee, and it matters less for a small business with a niche audience. It is best used as a directional indicator of attention, tracked over time against the same competitor set.

Why it matters

Infinall AI's research stage looks at competitors, and its Library includes Ad Spy for browsing real competitor ads, which can show how visible others are in your space. It turns a product URL into research, strategy, ad copy and creative that land in an Approval Queue for review before export. It does not calculate a share-of-voice percentage, see competitors' spend, or buy media. Use what you see as qualitative context for where competitors are loud and where there is a gap, not as a measured SOV figure.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate share of voice?

Divide your brand's visibility by the total visibility of everyone in your competitive set, then multiply by 100. Visibility can be impressions, spend, search presence or mentions. State which measure and which competitors you included, since changing either changes the result.

Can I get competitors' real ad spend to measure SOV?

Generally no. Competitors' actual spend is private. Third-party tools estimate it and public ad libraries show which ads are running, but neither gives exact figures. Treat any competitor spend number as an estimate and compare trends rather than relying on precise values.
