What Is SKAdNetwork (SKAN)? Apple's Privacy-Focused Install Attribution

SKAdNetwork (SKAN) is Apple's privacy-focused framework for attributing iOS app installs to ad campaigns without sharing user-level or device-level data. Apple confirms an install to the ad network in an aggregated, delayed postback.

In the SKAN model, the ad network, the publisher app and the advertised app take part in a flow where Apple records that an ad led to an install and then sends a signed postback to the ad network, after a delay and without identifying the person. The advertiser's app can set a 'conversion value', a small number encoding limited post-install behaviour, which the postback may include. Privacy thresholds can mean some postbacks carry less information when campaign volume is low.

The practical effect is coarser and slower reporting than the user-level attribution that existed before Apple's App Tracking Transparency changes (see what-is-mobile-attribution). Optimising on events beyond the first few days, or on small campaigns, is harder, and campaign structure often has to be simpler to stay above the privacy thresholds.

Apple has evolved the framework across versions and introduced a related framework called AdAttributionKit, so details change; check Apple's current documentation and your measurement partner's guidance (see what-is-a-mobile-measurement-partner) before designing around specifics.

Why it matters

Infinall AI turns a product URL into research, strategy, ad copy and creative that land in an Approval Queue for review before export. It does not implement SKAdNetwork, handle postbacks, connect to measurement partners or buy media, so all of that sits in your app, MMP and ad platforms. For app marketers, SKAN's limited signals make creative testing more important, since you may get slower and less detailed feedback; Infinall can help draft multiple distinct creative variants for you to review and test.

Frequently asked questions

Why does SKAdNetwork reporting feel limited compared with older iOS attribution?

It is designed to protect user privacy, so it returns aggregated, delayed and sometimes truncated data instead of user-level records. Privacy thresholds can also reduce detail on small campaigns. Advertisers usually adapt by simplifying campaign structure and relying on modelled or aggregated reporting.

Do I need to implement SKAdNetwork myself?

Your app needs to be set up correctly, but many teams use a mobile measurement partner or an ad network's SDK to handle registration, conversion values and postbacks. Check current Apple documentation and your partner's guidance, as the framework has changed across versions.
