What Is UGC in E-commerce Ads? Types, Permissions and When It Works

UGC (user-generated content) in e-commerce ads is advertising that uses content created by customers or independent creators, such as photos, reviews and unboxing or try-on videos, rather than content produced by the brand. It is valued for looking like a recommendation rather than a polished ad.

There are two main sources. Organic UGC is content customers post themselves, such as tagged photos and reviews, which you can ask to reuse. Commissioned UGC is made by creators you pay or send products to, following a brief but styled like ordinary social content. Both are often used in short vertical video and in static ads built around a review quote and a photo.

Permissions matter. Using someone's content in a paid ad generally needs their clear consent and, for paid creators, an agreement covering usage rights, duration and platforms. Sponsored or gifted content usually needs disclosure under advertising rules, which differ by country. This is general information, not legal advice. Reviews should be real and not edited to mislead.

It tends to suit products where social proof and seeing the product in use matter, such as apparel, beauty and gadgets. Its limits are inconsistent quality, the work of sourcing and clearing content, and creative that wears out like any other (see what-is-creative-rotation). Treat it as one creative type to test against studio-style ads, judged on your own results.

Why it matters

Infinall AI produces research, strategy, ad copy and creative for digital products, including e-commerce and Shopify stores, via an Approval Queue where you edit and approve before export. It does not source real customers or creators, collect permissions, or fabricate testimonials, and you should not use it to invent reviews. What it can do is draft ad copy and layouts around genuine customer language and reviews you supply and have rights to, so that you can review them before anything is exported. It does not buy media or manage live ad spend.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need permission to use customer photos or reviews in ads?

Generally yes. Reusing someone's content in a paid ad usually requires their clear consent, and paid creators typically sign an agreement covering usage rights and duration. Platform terms and local advertising and consumer laws also apply. This is general information, so consult a legal professional about your specific case.

Is UGC better than polished brand creative?

Not always. UGC often feels more authentic and suits social proof, but quality can vary and sourcing takes effort. Polished creative gives you control over message and consistency. Test both against each other on your own audience and judge by cost per result.
