How to Run Google Play Ads: App Campaigns Step-by-Step

To advertise on Google Play, you run an App campaign inside Google Ads: link your Play Console and measurement, pick a goal (installs, in-app actions or in-app action value), upload text, image and video assets, set a bid target and budget, then let Google combine assets across Search, Play, YouTube, Discover and the Display network. You control assets, goals, bids and budget; Google controls placement and combination. Infinall AI helps prepare copy and creative drafts for your review, but does not set up or manage your Google Ads account.

Google Play does not have a standalone ad product you buy separately. Play ads are delivered through App campaigns in Google Ads (formerly called Universal App Campaigns), which automatically run across Google's surfaces including Search, Google Play, YouTube, Discover and partner apps and sites. That means you give Google assets and a goal rather than choosing individual placements. Check Google's current App campaign documentation before you launch, since options and requirements change. Infinall AI works upstream of the platform: it can draft research, angles, copy and creative that land in an Approval Queue for you to edit and approve before export. You publish and manage spend in Google Ads.

How to Run Google Play Ads: App Campaigns Step-by-Step

  1. Link Google Ads, Play Console and Firebase or your measurement tool

Create or open your Google Ads account and link it to your Google Play developer account and to Firebase (or your mobile measurement partner). Linking is what lets Google see installs and in-app events and optimize toward them. Confirm in the conversions area that the events you care about, such as registration, trial start or purchase, are actually being recorded before you spend anything.

  2. Create an App campaign and pick the optimization goal

In Google Ads choose New campaign, select App promotion, choose Android and select your app. Then pick what to optimize for: installs, in-app actions, or in-app action value. Installs are the easiest place to start but optimizing for a deeper action such as a first purchase usually matches your business better. Google may recommend a minimum amount of conversion data before it suggests a deeper goal, so you may need to begin on installs and move up.

  3. Set locations, languages and a realistic budget

Choose the countries and languages where the app is available and where your economics work, because CPIs differ widely between regions. Set a daily budget you can sustain while the system learns. Google's guidance for App campaigns generally tells you to allow it time to learn and to avoid large frequent changes, so choose a budget you will not need to cut after three days.

  4. Add text, image and video assets

App campaigns build ads from the assets you provide: several short text lines, images in different sizes, and videos. Supply multiple distinct angles (a benefit, a feature, a use case) rather than minor rewordings, include a video where you can, and consider both portrait and landscape. Google reports asset performance ratings you can use later. Follow Google's asset specs and ad policies, which you are responsible for meeting.

  5. Set a bid target and launch

Depending on your goal you set a target cost per install, target cost per action, or target return on ad spend. Start with a target near what you can actually afford rather than an aspirational low number, which can starve delivery. Review the campaign, submit, and wait for ad approval. Avoid editing bids and budgets every day in the learning phase.

  6. Review asset and conversion reports, then refresh creative

After enough data has accumulated, look at asset performance, conversion rates by country, and cost per deeper action, not just cost per install. Replace low-rated assets with new angles, add new video concepts, and only then adjust bids or goals. Set a regular creative refresh since stale assets tend to lose efficiency over time.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a separate Google Play advertising platform?

No. Ads that promote your app on Google Play are bought through Google Ads App campaigns, which also run on other Google surfaces. You manage everything in Google Ads and link it to your Play Console account. Because Google combines your assets automatically, your levers are goals, assets, bids, budget and locations.

Can Infinall AI launch or manage my Google Play ads?

No. Infinall AI prepares research, strategy, ad copy and creative drafts for your review. You create the App campaign, publish it and manage spending in Google Ads. Infinall does not buy media or manage live ad spend, and it does not replace checking your assets against Google's ad policies. Drafts land in an Approval Queue where you edit and approve before export.

How many assets should I upload?

Upload as many distinct, high-quality assets as Google's limits allow within reason, covering different angles and formats, rather than many near-duplicates. The goal is to give the system real variety to test. Infinall's Pro plan at $30/month supports larger campaign batches than the Free plan, which is Lite mode with up to 3 image ads and 1 carousel per campaign, but you still upload the finished assets to Google Ads yourself.
