How to Track App Install Attribution (iOS and Android)

To track app install attribution, pick a measurement approach (a mobile measurement partner, or Firebase plus each platform's own reporting), integrate its SDK, define the in-app events that matter, set up tracking links or platform integrations per ad network, and reconcile what each source reports. On iOS, privacy rules limit user-level data, so expect aggregated and delayed signals. Infinall AI does not track installs or measure ads; it prepares creative and copy you then run and measure in your own stack.

Attribution answers one question: which campaign, ad or keyword led to this install and to what the user did afterward. For mobile apps it is harder than for websites because the install happens in a store, outside your site, and because Apple and Google restrict how much user-level data ad networks can see. The result is that there is rarely a single perfect number; you get an informed picture from several sources. The steps below are actions you take in your own measurement tool, ad accounts and app code. Check each vendor's current documentation, since privacy frameworks and SDKs change. Infinall AI is not an attribution tool. It prepares research, strategy, copy and creative for your review, which you edit and approve in an Approval Queue before export.

How to Track App Install Attribution (iOS and Android)

  1. Decide what you need to measure and pick the setup

List the events that define a valuable user (registration, trial start, subscription, purchase) and the decisions you will make from them, such as which ad network or keyword gets more budget. Then pick a setup: a mobile measurement partner (MMP) such as AppsFlyer, Adjust, Branch or Singular, or a lighter route using Firebase and the reporting inside each ad platform. MMPs add unified reporting and link management but cost money; check each vendor's current pricing and features [NEEDS VERIFICATION: current MMP pricing and free tiers].

  2. Integrate the SDK and define in-app events

Add the chosen SDK to your iOS and Android builds and send the events you listed with consistent names and, where relevant, revenue values. Test in a debug build and confirm in the tool's live view that installs and events arrive. Decide how you will treat consent: on iOS, App Tracking Transparency governs access to the advertising identifier, and privacy laws may require consent flows you must implement yourself.

  3. Set up iOS measurement with SKAdNetwork or AdAttributionKit and Apple Ads attribution

For iOS ads outside Apple's own, install-level results come through Apple's privacy-preserving frameworks (SKAdNetwork, with AdAttributionKit as its newer counterpart) rather than device-level IDs, so postbacks are aggregated and delayed, and conversion values must be mapped to the few events you care about. Configure the conversion value schema in your MMP or SDK. For Apple Ads, use Apple's AdServices attribution on supported iOS versions to see which campaign and keyword drove an install.

  4. Set up Android measurement with the Install Referrer and Google Ads linking

On Android, the Google Play Install Referrer API lets your app read the referrer string passed from the store, which is how many tools match an install to a click. Link Google Ads to Firebase or your MMP so App campaign installs and events are imported as conversions. Confirm that the same event names are used on both platforms so reports are comparable.

  5. Create tracking links and campaign naming for each channel

For each ad network that supports it, create tracking links or enable the network integration in your measurement tool, and adopt a naming convention (channel, campaign, ad set, creative, country) before launch. Where you use deep links, test that a tap opens the right screen for both installed and not-yet-installed users, including deferred deep links. Inconsistent names are a leading cause of reports you cannot read later.

  6. Reconcile sources and review on a schedule

Compare installs and events across the ad platform, the store console and your measurement tool. Differences are normal, caused by attribution windows, privacy thresholds, delayed postbacks and organic installs, so decide in advance which source is your source of truth for each decision. Review cost per valuable event by campaign weekly, and treat very small iOS cohorts as directional, not exact.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a mobile measurement partner?

Not always. If you run one or two channels, the reporting in each ad platform plus Firebase can be enough to start. An MMP becomes more useful when you run several networks and need one deduplicated view, link management and fraud tools, but it adds cost and an SDK to maintain. Decide based on how many channels you run and how much budget decisions depend on the comparison.

Does Infinall AI track installs or attribute conversions?

No. Infinall AI is not an attribution or analytics tool and does not measure live campaigns. It prepares campaign research, strategy, ad copy and creative drafts for your review before export. You implement tracking and read results in your own measurement tool and ad platforms. Using a consistent campaign naming convention when you export creative helps keep your reports clean.

Why don't my install numbers match across tools?

Different tools use different attribution windows, count view-through and click-through differently, and receive iOS data through delayed, aggregated privacy frameworks. Organic installs and users who install after seeing several ads also complicate matching. Pick one source of truth per decision, document its rules, and treat differences within a reasonable gap as expected rather than a bug.
