Fixed costs and repeat orders are excluded, so this is not company-wide profitability. Free, no sign-up. Runs in your browser; nothing you enter is uploaded.

How to use it

Calculate break-even CPA from your average order value and margin after variable costs. See the most your ads can cost per purchase before a first sale loses money.

  1. Pick your currency and enter your average order value (AOV).
  2. Enter gross margin after variable costs as a whole percent, such as 42.
  3. Compare the result with cost per purchase in your ad account, not cost per lead.

Formula

Break-even CPA = AOV × gross margin ÷ 100

First-order profit after ads = break-even CPA − actual CPA

No platform data is used: the formula follows from the definition of break-even

Example

Indian skincare store

A D2C skincare brand checks how much it can pay per order before the first sale loses money.

Average order value (AOV)
₹1,850
Gross margin
42%

Questions

Which gross margin should I enter?

Use the margin after every cost an order brings: product, shipping, payment fees, packaging and returns, as a percentage of revenue. Leave out ad spend and fixed costs such as salaries, rent and software. A product-only margin overstates what you can afford to bid.

How is break-even CPA different from my CPA?

Your CPA is what you actually paid per order: ad spend divided by purchases. Break-even CPA is the most the first order can contribute to that ad cost. Below it, the order leaves money after ads; above it, the order loses the gap. Count purchases, not leads or sign-ups.

Should I set my CPA target at break even?

Only if you are comfortable earning nothing on the first order before fixed costs. A target below break-even leaves some contribution. For example, a ₹1,850 order at a 42% margin supports ₹777 in ads; a ₹700 CPA leaves ₹77. Use the target ROAS calculator to plan for a profit margin.

What if customers buy from me again?

This calculator covers only the first order. Repeat orders can add contribution over time, but are not guaranteed. Estimate them with the LTV calculator and compare lifetime value with acquisition cost using the LTV:CAC ratio calculator.

I know my markup, not my margin. What do I enter?

Convert markup to margin first: margin = markup ÷ (100 + markup) × 100. A 150% markup gives a 60% margin; a 100% markup gives a 50% margin. If markup includes only product cost, also subtract shipping, fees, packaging and returns as a share of the selling price.

How does break-even CPA relate to break-even ROAS?

For a positive margin, AOV divided by break-even CPA equals break-even ROAS, or 100 divided by the whole-percent margin. At 0% margin, break-even CPA is zero and no finite ROAS can cover positive ad spend. Both measures describe the same first-order break-even point.
