Use 1080 × 1080 for a square design or 1080 × 1350 for a 4:5 portrait. These sizes use Instagram Help’s 1080 px feed width and ratios within the publishing API’s range. Last checked: 26 Oct 2026.

Instagram Help says the app supports 3:4 photos, but the publishing API accepts 4:5 to 1.91:1. This tool uses 4:5 as its tallest feed preset to avoid that difference. A 3:4 photo that posts in the app may still be rejected by a scheduler.

PNG preserves transparency. Instagram’s publishing API asks for JPEG, sRGB and a file of 8 MB or less, so select JPG for a scheduler. Transparent areas use the background colour under More options. Use Ad Image Compressor to shrink a large file.

Fill and crop fills the frame. A 1920 × 1080 photo keeps 56.25% in square and 45% in portrait. The portrait crop is enlarged 1.25× and may look soft. Move the focus sliders under More options, or choose Fit inside to keep the whole photo with background bands.

Resizing cannot recover missing detail. A 900 × 900 photo needs 1.20× enlargement for square and 1.50× for a filled portrait crop. Use the largest original you have and check small text in the exported file.
