How it works
Fill and crop: if 16 × width ≥ 9 × height, frame = (9 × height ÷ 16) × height, else width × (16 × width ÷ 9)
Kept share = min(16w, 9h) ÷ max(16w, 9h)
Feed square = rows 7⁄32 to 25⁄32 of the frame height (21.875% to 78.125%)

Questions
What shape should an Instagram Reel cover be?
Instagram's developer docs recommend 9:16 (checked 26 Oct 2026). Choose 1080 × 1920, 720 × 1280 or your own 9:16 dimensions.
What happens if my cover isn't 9:16?
Instagram crops it to the central 9:16 rectangle. Crop it here to choose which part stays.
Which part shows in the feed?
The middle square spans 21.875% to 78.125% of the cover height, hiding the top and bottom 21.875%. Keep faces, products and prices inside the dashed square.
Why is most of my image cut off?
A photo wider than 9:8 loses more than half its area in a 9:16 crop; a 4:3 photo keeps about 42%. Move the focus or use Fit inside to keep the whole photo with plain bands.
Can I upload my Reel video?
No, only still images are supported. Pause your Reel, take a screenshot and upload it.
