How to use it
Find your average cost per video view and per 1,000 views from actual ad spend, not a bid or a price estimate.
- Enter your video ad spend.
- Enter the view count reported by your ad platform.
- Compare cost per view and cost per 1,000 views.
Formula
CPV = ad spend ÷ views
Cost per 1,000 views = ad spend × 1,000 ÷ views, without intermediate rounding
Neither works with 0 views
Based on the metric definition, not platform data
Example
Cookware recipe demo
A Coimbatore cookware brand measures the cost of views for a recipe demo in India (₹).
- Ad spend
- ₹1,03,500
- View count
- 3,60,000
Questions
What does CPV mean in advertising?
CPV means cost per view: ad spend divided by video views, regardless of how the campaign was billed.
Which view count should I use?
Use reported video views, not impressions, for the same ads and dates as your spend. Platforms count views differently, so check their definitions before comparing.
Why show cost per 1,000 views as well?
It reveals differences hidden by rounding: ₹1,03,500 for 3,60,000 views gives a CPV of ₹0.2875, shown as ₹0.29. Cost per 1,000 views is ₹287.50, not ₹290.00.
How is CPV different from CPM and CPC?
CPM is cost per 1,000 impressions, CPC is cost per click, and CPV is cost per view. Cost per 1,000 views is not CPM: views and impressions are different counts.
Is a lower CPV always better?
No. Lower CPV does not guarantee more sales. Compare CPC and CPA to see what clicks and conversions cost.
Can I use rounded CPV to estimate spend?
Use unrounded CPV: $2,970 for 132,000 views gives $0.0225 per view (shown as $0.02) and $22.50 per 1,000 views. At that rate, 40,000 more views would cost $900, not $800.
