Questions
Why does a short link count as 23 characters?
X assigns 23 characters to each recognized URL because it uses t.co links. Bare domains can count as links too. Email addresses count letter by letter. A domain this tool doesn’t recognize as a link also counts letter by letter.
Does an emoji with a skin tone count more?
X’s documented rule is 2 per emoji sequence, including skin tones and joined families. This counter uses twitter-text v3, whose older emoji data can overcount newer joined sequences.
Why does ₹ count as 2 while $ counts as 1?
The $ sign is in a Unicode range with weight 1. ₹ is outside those ranges and weighs 2. “₹999 only” therefore counts 10. The euro sign and the single ellipsis character also weigh 2.
How are Hindi and Japanese posts counted?
Hindi is counted by code point, not visible letter: नमस्ते counts 6. Japanese, Chinese and Korean characters usually weigh 2 each: 日本語 counts 6. Accented text is normalized to NFC before weighting.
What happens above 280 characters?
The tool shows the excess and highlights the overflow without deleting your draft at 280. You can still copy the full draft. This tool accepts up to 20,000 Unicode code points, which is a tool limit, not an X limit.
Does this check longer posts?
No. It checks the standard 280-weighted-character format only, not longer posts.
