Google Animated Display Ad Specs: GIF and HTML5 Rules

Google animated display ad specs for GIF banners: the file must be GIF, no larger than 150 KB, animate for 30 seconds or less and run slower than 5 FPS. Loops are allowed, but the animation must stop after 30 seconds. HTML5 animated ads are a ZIP of 600 KB or smaller with no more than 40 files, and only accounts that meet Google's eligibility rules can use them.

An animated display ad on the Google Display Network is an uploaded banner that moves. Google accepts two main kinds: an animated GIF, which follows the same size and file rules as a still image ad plus limits on length and speed, and an HTML5 ad, which is a ZIP of web files that only some accounts may upload. A third option, the AMPHTML ad, also uses a ZIP. This guide lists the rules from Google Ads Help for each kind, shows the 20 banner sizes they share, and gives a short checklist for making a file that passes on the first upload.

Google Animated Display Ad Specs: GIF and HTML5 Rules

  1. Choose GIF or HTML5

Most advertisers should start with an animated GIF, because any account can upload one. HTML5 ads need an account with more than $9,000 USD in lifetime spend and a good policy history, or an approved application from an account with more than $1,000 USD in lifetime spend and a good payment history. If you do not qualify, Google points you to uploaded image ads, AMPHTML ads or responsive display ads instead.

  2. Pick your banner sizes

Animated GIF and HTML5 ads use the same 20 sizes as still image ads. You do not need all of them. Cover one of each shape first: a rectangle such as 300 x 250, a tall banner such as 160 x 600 or 300 x 600, a wide banner such as 728 x 90 and a mobile banner such as 320 x 50. Each size is its own file.

  3. Plan a short animation

Keep the total animation at 30 seconds or less. You can loop it, but it must stop by the 30 second mark, so a 10 second sequence can play three times at most. Put the brand and offer in the final frame, because that is the frame people see once the animation stops. For a GIF, keep the frame rate below 5 FPS, which suits simple frame-to-frame changes rather than smooth video.

  4. Export within the file limit

Each animated GIF must be 150 KB or less. Every frame adds weight, so cut frames, reduce colours or simplify the background if the file is too big. For HTML5, publish a ZIP of 600 KB or smaller with no more than 40 files, include the ad.size meta tag, keep all images inside the ZIP and use relative paths.

  5. Check every size before you upload

Open each file at its real size. Text that reads well in a 300 x 600 banner can be too small in a 320 x 50 mobile banner. Check the file size of each export, not just the first one, and watch the full animation to confirm it stops within 30 seconds.

  6. Use the free tools and Infinall AI for the parts they cover

The free Google Display Ad Resizer turns one image into all 20 sizes in one zip, compressed for the 150 KB limit, and the Ad Image Compressor brings a single file down to 150 KB. The Google Display Ad Mockup previews your copy and image in 20 sizes. Infinall AI can make the still images and the ad copy for your frames from your saved brand, using credits; the Free plan has 1,000 credits a month with no card. It does not export animated GIF or HTML5 banners, so you assemble the animation in your own design tool.

Google display ads specifications for animated GIFs

Google treats an animated GIF as an image ad. That means the same file types (GIF, JPG, PNG, though only GIF can move), the same 150 KB limit and the same 20 sizes as a still banner. On top of that come two animation rules: the animation must last 30 seconds or less, and an animated GIF must run slower than 5 FPS. Loops are allowed as long as the animation stops after 30 seconds.

The 150 KB limit is the rule that rejects most animated files. A still banner has one frame; an animated one has many, and each adds to the size. Large banners such as 300 x 1050 or 970 x 250 fill up fastest. Plan fewer frames from the start rather than trying to squeeze a heavy file afterwards.

Google display ads creative specs for HTML5

HTML5 ads let you build richer animation and interaction with HTML, CSS and JavaScript, packed in a ZIP. The ZIP can hold HTML plus CSS, JS, GIF, PNG, JPG, JPEG and SVG files, must be 600 KB or smaller and can contain no more than 40 files. The HTML must include a doctype declaration, html and body tags, explicit end tags and an ad.size meta tag that matches the banner size. All images must sit inside the ZIP, and code may only reference outside files from the short list Google allows, such as Google Fonts and Google-hosted animation libraries.

The catch is access. Google only allows HTML5 ads for accounts that meet its eligibility rules, so a new account usually cannot use them. Also note that in Demand Gen campaigns, HTML5 ads serve only on the Display Network, not on YouTube, Discover, Maps or Gmail.

Google display ads dimensions for animated banners

Animated GIF and HTML5 ads share the same 20 sizes: 200 x 200, 240 x 400, 250 x 250, 250 x 360, 300 x 250, 336 x 280 and 580 x 400 for squares and rectangles; 120 x 600, 160 x 600, 300 x 600 and 300 x 1050 for tall banners; 468 x 60, 728 x 90, 930 x 180, 970 x 90, 970 x 250 and 980 x 120 for wide banners; and 300 x 50, 320 x 50 and 320 x 100 for mobile. Google notes that some sizes show only in certain regions. Each size needs its own file, and a layout rarely works in every shape without rearranging the logo, text and button.

When a responsive display ad is the better choice

If you mainly want reach and do not need a fixed animated design, a responsive display ad can be simpler: you upload images, logos and text, and Google fits them to the space. You give up control of the exact layout and the animation, but you skip making a file for every size. Many advertisers run both: animated banners for the sizes that matter most, and a responsive display ad to cover the rest.

Where Infinall AI fits, and where it does not

Infinall AI makes images, motion videos, audio and copy from your saved brand. For an animated banner, that covers the pictures and words for each frame. Its motion videos export as MP4, which is a video file, not an animated GIF or HTML5 banner, so they suit video placements rather than the uploaded display ad slot. Infinall AI also does not buy media: you upload and run the ads in your own Google Ads account. If you already have a designer who builds HTML5 banners, you may not need Infinall at all for this step.

How long can a Google animated display ad be?

The animation must be 30 seconds or shorter. Loops are allowed, but the animation must stop after 30 seconds in total.

What is the file size limit for HTML5 display ads?

The ZIP must be 600 KB or smaller and contain no more than 40 files. Animated GIF image ads have a lower limit of 150 KB.
