How to Make Ad Variations: A Simple Process That Tests One Idea

To make ad variations, start from one control ad, decide which single element you will change (the hook, the image, the headline or the offer), then make 2 to 4 versions that differ only in that element. Run them side by side with the same budget and audience, and keep the winner. In Infinall AI, select an image and use Variations to make 2 to 4 alternatives in one step.

An ad variation is a copy of an ad with one part changed, so you can see which version people respond to. Marketers make variations to find a stronger hook, to keep a campaign fresh when people have seen the same picture too often, and to fit one idea to different placements such as a square feed post and a tall story. The work is the same on every platform: pick what to change, make a few clean versions, name them clearly and compare them fairly. The steps below work with any design tool or ad manager. After them you will see how to make ad variations in Infinall AI from a single image or prompt.

How to Make Ad Variations: A Simple Process That Tests One Idea

  1. Pick a control ad

Start from the ad you would run if you could only run one. This is your control, and every variation is compared with it. If you have no history yet, use your clearest version of the offer: one product, one benefit, one call to action.

  2. Choose one thing to change

Write down the single element you are testing, such as the first line of copy, the main image, the headline, the colour of the background or the offer itself. Changing several things at once makes the result impossible to read, because you will not know which change made the difference. Keep a short list of later tests for the other ideas.

  3. Make 2 to 4 versions

Make a small set of versions that differ only in the chosen element. For an image test, keep the copy identical; for a copy test, keep the image identical. A small set keeps each version's share of the budget large enough to learn something.

  4. Fit each platform's limits

Check every version against the limits of the place it will run. A Google Ads responsive search ad takes 3 to 15 headlines of up to 30 characters and 2 to 4 descriptions of up to 90 characters, and Google mixes them for you. A YouTube in-feed video ad headline allows 40 characters per line, and an Instagram feed photo 1080 pixels wide can be between 566 and 1440 pixels tall.

  5. Name and track every version

Give each variation a name that says what changed, for example hook-question or image-lifestyle, and use the same name in your file names and in the ad manager. Add tracking links with UTM tags so results in your analytics match the right version.

  6. Run them fairly and compare

Launch the versions at the same time, to the same audience, with the same budget. Wait until each one has enough clicks or conversions before you judge, then check whether the gap is real with an A/B test significance calculator. Keep the winner as your new control and test the next element on your list.

How to make ad variations in Infinall AI

Infinall AI has three ways to get more than one image at once, all on Free and Pro:

  • Generations: ask for up to 4 images from one prompt in a single send.
  • Variations: select an image you already have, open the edit toolbar and choose Variations to make 2 to 4 alternatives of it.
  • Batch edit: apply one change, such as a new background or headline treatment, to up to 20 images at once.

Pin your brand to the Studio project first, so every version uses your logo, colours and voice without you describing them in each prompt. Use Resize with Crop or Fit, which is free, to turn a winning design into other shapes. Each image that is made uses credits, edits and variations show an approximate price before you send, and an image that fails is not charged. On Pro, Video can make 1 to 20 versions of a video at once.

YouTube, Instagram and eBay

On YouTube, the fastest variation to test is the opening of the video, because it decides whether people keep watching; keep the rest of the cut the same and change only the first few seconds or the headline. On Instagram, test the image or the first line of the caption, and make each version in the shapes your placements use, such as a square or portrait feed post and a tall story. On eBay, the word variations usually refers to one listing that offers several sizes or colours, which is a listing setting rather than an ad test, so check eBay's own seller help for that.

Common mistakes

  • Changing the image, the copy and the offer at once, so a win teaches you nothing.
  • Making too many versions for a small budget, so none of them gets enough results to judge.
  • Stopping a test after a day because one version is ahead early.
  • Giving versions vague names like final-2, which makes results hard to match later.
  • Forgetting the platform limits, so a headline gets cut off or an image is cropped badly.

Free vs Pro for ad variations

Free gives 1,000 credits every month with no card, which is enough to try Generations, Variations and Batch edit on your own brand. Pro costs $10 for the first month, then $30 a month or $299 a year, gives 3,000 credits a month and adds Video, where one run can make several versions of a video ad. Infinall makes the creative and can publish or boost posts from the Social Hub, but it does not buy media for you: the ad platform charges your own ad account for the spend.

Frequently asked questions

How many ad variations should I make?

Start with 2 to 4 versions that differ in one element. That is enough to learn which direction works without splitting a small budget too thinly.

How do I make ad variations for Google search ads?

Write several headlines and descriptions in one responsive search ad. Google asks for 3 to 15 headlines of up to 30 characters and 2 to 4 descriptions of up to 90 characters, and it combines them for you.

Can Infinall AI make variations of an image I already have?

Yes. Import the image into a Studio project, select it and use Variations in the edit toolbar to make 2 to 4 alternatives. It uses credits, with an approximate price shown before you send.

Is making ad variations free in Infinall AI?

Making images uses credits, and the Free plan gives 1,000 credits every month with no card. Resizing with Crop or Fit, downloading and exporting are free.
