Instagram Caption Character Limit: 2200 Characters and Hashtags
The Instagram caption character limit is 2200 characters, according to Instagram's developer documentation, which also caps a caption at 30 hashtags and 20 @ tags. Only the start of a caption shows before the "more" link, so put your main point and any call to action in the first line.
Checked October 2026. Sources are listed at the end of the page.
A caption has three separate limits: its total length, the number of hashtags and the number of accounts you tag. A caption can be well under the character limit and still be refused because it has too many hashtags. This guide sets out each limit with its official source, explains what to do about spaces, emoji and line breaks, and gives a short routine for writing a caption that fits before you post or schedule it.
| Limit | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Caption length | Maximum 2200 characters | Instagram Graph API reference (Meta for Developers) |
| Hashtags in a caption | Maximum 30 hashtags | Instagram Graph API reference (Meta for Developers) |
| @ tags in a caption | Maximum 20 @ tags | Instagram Graph API reference (Meta for Developers) |
| Tags per post (Help Center) | Up to 5 tags; with more than 5, the comment won't post | Instagram Help Center |
| Characters inside a hashtag | Numbers allowed; spaces and special characters such as $ or % won't work | Instagram Help Center |
| Caption shown before "more" in the Infinall composer | 125 characters | Infinall caption limits docs |
| Images or videos in one Infinall Instagram post | Up to 10 | Infinall caption limits docs |
Instagram Caption Character Limit: 2200 Characters and Hashtags
Write the first line first
Start with the sentence that has to do the work: the offer, the hook or the question. Readers see only the opening of a caption before the "more" link, so a strong first line matters more than the total length. The Infinall composer flags the point at 125 characters as a guide for where the cut falls.
Write the body and keep a margin
Add the detail, the story or the steps after the first line. Aim to finish well under 2200 characters so you have room for hashtags, tags and a last edit. Treat every space, line break and emoji as part of the count, because the limit is stated in characters, not words.
Check hashtags and tags
Count your hashtags and @ tags separately from the characters. The developer limit is 30 hashtags and 20 @ tags, and the Instagram Help Center says you can use up to 5 tags on a post. Remove spaces and symbols like $ or % from inside hashtags, since they won't work there.
Count the final text
Paste the finished caption into a character counter before you post. Our free Instagram Caption Character Counter counts characters and hashtags against the 2200 limit, including emoji and line breaks, so you see the real total rather than a guess.
Schedule it with a live counter
If you plan posts in the Infinall AI calendar, the composer shows a counter such as 120/2200 under the caption box. It turns red when you go over and blocks scheduling until the caption fits. If you post to several platforms, you can switch off Write once for all and write a shorter caption for one platform only.
Instagram caption character limit in 2026
When we checked in October 2026, the Instagram Graph API reference on Meta for Developers stated: "Maximum 2200 characters, 30 hashtags, and 20 @ tags." That is the published limit for a caption. Instagram can change its limits, so if a caption is close to the maximum, check the official page linked in the sources below before you rely on the exact number.
Does the limit include spaces?
The limit is a character count, and the official reference does not list spaces, line breaks or emoji as exceptions. The safe plan is to count everything you type: letters, spaces, line breaks, punctuation, emoji, hashtags and @ tags. A counter that includes all of these, such as our free caption counter, gives you a number you can trust before you post.
Emoji and symbols can be counted differently by different tools, so if your caption is within a few characters of 2200, cut a little more rather than testing the edge.
Is there an Instagram caption word limit?
No word limit is published. Instagram states the limit in characters, so the number of words that fit depends on how long your words are and how many spaces, emoji and hashtags you use. Short words and few emoji fit more words; long hashtags fit fewer. Plan in characters and use a counter rather than estimating from a word count.
Hashtags: 30 or 5?
Two official Instagram pages give different numbers. The developer reference allows a maximum of 30 hashtags in a caption, while the Instagram Help Center says you can use up to 5 tags on a post and that a comment with more than 5 won't post. If you want a caption that works everywhere, keep to 5 or fewer. Our separate Instagram hashtag limit guide covers this in more detail.
How Infinall AI helps with captions
Infinall AI can draft caption copy in Infinall Chat using your saved brand voice, and Auto replies in chat are free with a fair use limit. You then paste or write the caption in a new post in the Social Hub calendar, where the per-platform counter checks Instagram's 2200 limit and the 125-character fold. Planning, scheduling and publishing in the calendar never use credits. Publishing by itself needs a connected Instagram account, which is a Pro feature; without one you still schedule the post and get a reminder at the time.
If you only need to check a caption you already wrote, the free counter is the faster choice and needs no account. The free plan gives 1,000 credits every month with no card, and Pro costs $10 for the first month, then $30 a month or $299 a year.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Instagram caption character limit?
2200 characters, according to the Instagram Graph API reference on Meta for Developers. The same reference allows up to 30 hashtags and 20 @ tags.
Do hashtags count toward the 2200 characters?
Plan as if they do. Hashtags are part of the caption text, and they also have their own cap of 30 in the developer reference. Count the full caption, hashtags included.
How much of a caption shows before the more link?
Only the opening part. The Infinall composer flags 125 characters as the point where the caption is cut off, so keep the key message in the first line.
What happens if my caption is too long in Infinall AI?
The counter turns red and the app shows "Caption too long" for that platform. Scheduling is blocked until you shorten the caption or write a separate one for Instagram.
