Instagram Hashtag Limit: 5 Tags per Post, and the Old 30 Rule
The Instagram hashtag limit is 5 tags per post: Instagram's help center says you can use up to 5 tags, and if you include more than 5 on a single photo or video, your comment won't post. Hashtags can contain numbers, but spaces and special characters such as $ or % don't work.

Many guides still say Instagram allows 30 hashtags. That number has not disappeared: Meta's developer documentation for publishing through the Instagram API still lists a caption maximum of 2200 characters, 30 hashtags and 20 @ tags. Instagram's own help center, which describes what people see in the app, now says up to 5 tags on a post. If you write for both, plan for 5. A post with 5 well chosen tags passes both rules, while a post with 30 can fail. This guide sets out both numbers with their sources, the character rules for a hashtag, and a short process to check a caption before you post or schedule it.
| Rule | Official limit | Source | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hashtags per post (app) | Up to 5 tags | Instagram Help Center | Use 5 or fewer on every feed post and Reel. |
| More than 5 tags | Your comment won't post | Instagram Help Center | Remove tags until 5 are left, then try again. |
| Characters in a hashtag | Numbers allowed; spaces and special characters like $ or % won't work | Instagram Help Center | Write #summersale26, not #summer sale or #50%off. |
| Hashtags per caption (API publishing) | 30 hashtags | Meta developer docs | Treat this as an upper bound for API tools, not a target. |
| Caption length (API publishing) | 2200 characters | Meta developer docs | Hashtags count toward this total. |
| @ tags per caption (API publishing) | 20 @ tags | Meta developer docs | Mentions are counted separately from hashtags. |
Instagram Hashtag Limit: 5 Tags per Post, and the Old 30 Rule
Write the caption first
Write the caption without any hashtags. Put the main point at the start, because Instagram shows only the first part of a long caption before people tap to see more.
List candidate tags, then cut to 5
Write down every tag you would like to use, then keep the 5 that best describe the post: what it shows, the product type, the place or the event, and your own brand tag if you have one. Drop broad tags that say nothing about this post.
Check each tag's characters
Join words with no spaces and keep to letters and numbers. Instagram says numbers are allowed, but spaces and special characters such as $ or % won't work, so a tag like #50%off stops at the symbol.
Count the whole caption
Paste the caption with its tags into a counter and check two numbers: 5 or fewer hashtags, and 2200 characters or fewer in total. The free Instagram caption character counter does both counts in your browser.
Schedule it and check the preview
In Infinall AI, open Distribution > Calendar and click New post. The Instagram caption box has a counter against 2200 characters, turns red when you are over and blocks scheduling until the caption fits. Count the hashtags yourself before you schedule.
Why you see two different numbers: 5 and 30
The two numbers come from two different official pages written for different readers. Instagram's help center page on using hashtags says: "You can use up to 5 tags on a post. If you include more than 5 tags on a single photo/video, your comment won't post." That is the rule for posting in the app today.
Meta's developer reference for publishing media through the Instagram API says a caption can have a "Maximum 2200 characters, 30 hashtags, and 20 @ tags." That page is for developers of publishing tools, and it is where the long-quoted 30 hashtag figure still appears.
The practical answer is simple: 5 tags fit inside both limits. If you schedule through a third-party tool that still allows 30, the tool may accept a caption that Instagram's own rule would not, so do not rely on the tool's counter alone.
What happens if you use more than 5 hashtags
Instagram's help center says that if you include more than 5 tags on a single photo or video, your comment won't post. In other words, the text does not go through with too many tags in it. The help page does not describe a separate, higher allowance for hashtags placed in a comment, so moving extra tags into the first comment is not a safe way around the limit.
If a caption fails, count the # signs first. Remove tags until 5 are left, check that none contain a space or a special character, and post again.
How to choose your 5 hashtags
With only 5 tags, each one has to earn its place. A simple mix that works for most brands:
- 1 tag for what the post shows, for example the product type.
- 1 or 2 tags for the topic or the problem the post solves.
- 1 tag for the place, if you sell locally or the post is about an event.
- 1 branded tag, if you already use one, so your own posts are easy to find together.
Keep the tags relevant to that specific post rather than reusing the same block on every post. Tags must be written without spaces, and characters like $ or % won't work, so spell out words such as "percent" or drop them.
Where Infinall AI helps, and where it does not
Infinall AI makes images, motion videos, video (Pro), audio and copy from your saved brand, and you can plan the post in the Social Hub calendar. The calendar composer counts Instagram caption characters against 2200, warns you at the point where the caption is cut off before "more", and holds up to 10 images or videos in one Instagram post. It does not trim hashtags for you, so keep the count of 5 yourself.
Planning and scheduling in the calendar use no credits. Connecting an Instagram account so posts publish by themselves is a Pro feature; without one, you still schedule the post and get a reminder at the time. The free plan gives 1,000 credits every month with no card.
Frequently asked questions
How many hashtags can you use on Instagram in 2026?
Up to 5 tags on a post, according to Instagram's help center. With more than 5 tags on a single photo or video, your comment won't post.
Is the Instagram hashtag limit 30 or 5?
Both numbers appear on official pages. Instagram's help center says 5 tags per post. Meta's developer documentation for API publishing still lists 30 hashtags per caption. Use 5, because it fits both.
Can I put extra hashtags in the first comment?
Instagram's help center words the limit as "your comment won't post" and does not describe a separate allowance for comments, so do not count on the first comment for extra tags.
Which characters are allowed in an Instagram hashtag?
Letters and numbers. Instagram says numbers are allowed, but spaces and special characters such as $ or % won't work.
Do hashtags count toward the Instagram caption length?
Yes. They are part of the caption text, and Meta's developer documentation sets the caption maximum at 2200 characters, together with 30 hashtags and 20 @ tags for API publishing.
