Instagram Feed Image Size: Pixels, Ratio and Resolution
The best Instagram feed image size is 1080 pixels wide with a height between 566 and 1440 pixels, which covers aspect ratios from 1.91:1 (landscape) to 3:4 (portrait). Instagram keeps photos between 320 and 1080 pixels wide at their original resolution, enlarges narrower photos to 320 and reduces wider ones to 1080.

An Instagram feed photo has two things to get right: its width in pixels and its shape. Instagram's help center explains what happens to each. If the width is between 320 and 1080 pixels and the shape is inside the supported range, the photo keeps its original resolution. Outside those numbers, Instagram resizes or crops it for you, and that is where blurry or badly cropped posts come from. This guide lists the official numbers, then shows how to prepare a file that needs no changes on upload.
| Setting | Official guidance | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Width kept as is | 320 to 1080 pixels | A photo in this range keeps its original resolution, if its shape is also supported. |
| Narrower than 320 pixels | Enlarged to 320 pixels wide | Small images get stretched, so start from a larger original. |
| Wider than 1080 pixels | Reduced to 1080 pixels wide | Extra width is not shown; 1080 is the useful maximum width in the app. |
| Supported shapes in the app | 1.91:1 to 3:4 | Anything wider or taller is cropped to fit the supported range. |
| Height at 1080 wide | 566 to 1440 pixels | 566 is the widest landscape, 1080 is a square, 1440 is the tallest portrait. |
| Publishing through the API | JPEG, up to 8 MB, 4:5 to 1.91:1, 320 to 1440 wide, sRGB | Scheduling tools that post for you follow these rules, which allow 4:5 at most for tall images. |
Instagram Feed Image Size: Pixels, Ratio and Resolution
Pick the shape first
Decide between landscape, square and portrait before you design. At 1080 pixels wide, a landscape post can be as short as 566 pixels, a square is 1080 x 1080, and a portrait can be as tall as 1440 pixels in the app. If a scheduling tool will publish the post, use 4:5 as your tallest shape, because the publishing API accepts 4:5 to 1.91:1.
Set the canvas to 1080 pixels wide
Make the canvas 1080 pixels wide in your editor, in pixels rather than inches or centimetres. A wider canvas is reduced to 1080 anyway, and a canvas narrower than 320 pixels gets enlarged, which softens the picture. Anything from 320 to 1080 keeps its resolution, but 1080 gives the sharpest result in the feed.
Keep the main subject away from the edges
If your image ends up outside the supported shapes, Instagram crops it. Put the product, face or headline near the middle so that a crop does not cut it. This is a layout habit, not an Instagram rule, but it protects you when the same image is reused in a different shape.
Export a JPEG and check the file
Export as JPEG in the sRGB colour space and keep the file at or under 8 MB, which are the publishing API rules. Reopen the exported file and check its width, height and shape, not just the design file you worked in.
Resize an existing image or make a new one
If the picture is right and only the size is wrong, use the free Instagram Post Resizer linked below. It makes a 1080 x 1080 square or a 4:5 portrait, either cropped or with the whole photo kept. If you need a new picture, Infinall AI can make one from a prompt in the 1:1, 4:5, 3:4 or 1.91:1 shape, all inside the feed range. Then check the export against the table above.
Instagram feed image size in pixels
Width is the number that matters most. Instagram keeps a photo at its original resolution when it is between 320 and 1080 pixels wide and its aspect ratio is between 1.91:1 and 3:4. A photo narrower than 320 pixels is enlarged to 320, and a photo wider than 1080 pixels is reduced to 1080.
So a 1080 pixel wide image is the practical target. The height then follows from the shape you choose:
- Landscape at 1.91:1: 1080 x 566 pixels.
- Square at 1:1: 1080 x 1080 pixels.
- Portrait at 4:5: 1080 pixels wide, a little shorter than 3:4.
- Tallest portrait at 3:4: 1080 x 1440 pixels.
Instagram feed image size ratio
Instagram's help center gives the supported range as 1.91:1 to 3:4. That is the range for photos you share in the app. Meta's developer documentation for publishing through the Instagram API is a little stricter on tall images: it says the aspect ratio must be within a 4:5 to 1.91:1 range.
In practice, this means a 3:4 portrait is fine when you post by hand, but a scheduling tool that publishes through the API needs a shape inside the API range. If you schedule posts, use 4:5 as your tallest shape and you meet both sets of rules. If you only post from the app, 3:4 gives you a little more height in the feed.
Instagram feed image resolution
Resolution on Instagram is about width in pixels, not about dots per inch. A photo between 320 and 1080 pixels wide keeps its original resolution, so a sharp 1080 pixel image stays sharp. Uploading a much larger file does not add detail in the feed, because it is reduced to 1080 pixels wide.
The publishing API also allows a width from 320 to 1440 pixels, a JPEG file of up to 8 MB, and expects the sRGB colour space. If your camera or editor exports in a different colour profile, convert to sRGB before you upload so colours do not shift.
Where Infinall AI fits, and where it does not
Infinall AI makes new images from a prompt and lets you pick the shape before you send. The feed-friendly shapes are 1:1 (1024 x 1024 pixels), 4:5 (1024 x 1280), 3:4 (1024 x 1365) and 1.91:1 (1200 x 628). The first three are inside the 320 to 1080 width range Instagram keeps as is; the 1.91:1 image is 1200 wide, so Instagram reduces it to 1080. The shape does not change the price. There is no custom size for a new image, and making an image uses credits.
If you want an image exactly 1080 pixels wide, the free Resize tool in Infinall AI accepts a width and height from 64 to 4096 pixels, and Enhance can make an image 2 or 4 times bigger at no credit cost. If you already have finished artwork from a designer or a photo app, you may not need Infinall at all: the free Instagram Post Resizer or your own editor is the quicker route. The free plan gives 1,000 credits every month with no card.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best Instagram feed image size?
1080 pixels wide. With that width, the height can be 566 pixels for landscape, 1080 for square, or up to 1440 for the tallest 3:4 portrait.
Why does Instagram make my photo blurry?
A common cause is a photo narrower than 320 pixels, which Instagram enlarges to 320 pixels wide. Start from an image at least 1080 pixels wide so Instagram never has to stretch it.
Is 4:5 or 3:4 the tallest Instagram feed shape?
The Instagram help center supports up to 3:4 for photos shared in the app. The publishing API used by scheduling tools allows up to 4:5. Use 4:5 if a tool will post for you.
What file type should an Instagram feed image be?
The publishing API asks for a JPEG of up to 8 MB in the sRGB colour space. A JPEG that meets those rules is a safe choice for posting from the app too.
