What Is a Boosted Post? How Boosting Works, With an Example
A boosted post is a post you already published on your page or profile that you pay to show to more people, so it runs as an ad without you making a new picture or new text. You pick a goal, a daily budget and how many days it runs, and the platform charges that spend to your ad account.

What a boosted post is
Every social post starts as an organic post: it reaches the people the platform chooses to show it to, for free. Boosting adds money to that same post. You keep the picture, the video and the caption exactly as they are, and the platform shows the post to more people as a paid placement.
That is the key difference from building an ad from scratch. A boost starts from something that already exists and already has likes and comments on it. Those likes and comments stay with the post, so people who see the boosted version can see that others have engaged with it.
A boosted post is still an ad. It needs a budget, it is paid for through an ad account, it goes through the platform's ad review, and it is labelled as sponsored or promoted when people see it. The only thing that makes it a "boost" is that the creative comes from a post you already published.
What you choose when you boost
Most platforms ask the same handful of questions when you press a boost button:
- Goal: what you want people to do. Common choices are more engagement, more profile or page visits, more website visits or more messages.
- Audience: who should see the post. You can usually keep it to people like your current followers or set a location, age range and interests.
- Budget: how much to spend, usually as an amount per day.
- Duration: how many days the boost runs before it stops by itself.
- Ad account and payment: the account that pays the bill.
Boost screens keep these choices short on purpose. If you need more control, such as several versions of the creative, custom audiences built from your own customer lists or detailed placement choices, a full ad built in the platform's ads manager is the better tool.
What is a boosted post on Facebook, Instagram and X
The idea is the same on each network, but the button and the rules differ.
What is a boosted post on Facebook: a post from your Facebook Page that you pay to show to people beyond your followers. It is paid for through a Meta ad account, the same account that pays for any other Meta ad.
What is a boosted post on Instagram: a post from your Instagram account that you pay to show to more people. It also runs through a Meta ad account, so Facebook and Instagram boosts can share one budget and one bill.
What is a boosted post on X: the same idea applied to a post on X. You pick a post you already published and pay to show it to more people instead of building a whole campaign.
Each platform changes its boost screens from time to time, and the exact eligibility rules (account type, verification, which posts can be boosted, where boosted posts appear) live in its own help center. Check the help page for your network before you plan a boost around a specific option.
Boosted post vs a full ad: when each one makes sense
Boost a post when:
- The post is already doing well organically and you want more of the same people to see it.
- You want quick reach for an event, an offer or an announcement that is already on your page.
- You do not want to make new creative or learn an ads manager.
Build a full ad instead when:
- You want a sales or lead goal with tracking on your website.
- You want to test several images, videos or headlines against each other.
- You need audiences or placements that the boost screen does not offer.
- The post that did well organically has a caption written for followers, not for strangers who have never heard of you.
A common mistake is boosting a post just because it is the newest one. Boost the posts that already earned engagement for free: they are the best signal that the creative works.
How to boost a post in Infinall AI
In Infinall AI you boost from the Social Hub calendar, where your published posts live. Boost post pays to show a post you already published to more people, using the post as it is. The steps:
- Connect an ad account (for example Meta Ads) in the Social Hub. Connecting accounts is a Pro feature, and a Free account that has not connected one sees "No ad account connected." with a Connect one link.
- Open a post that is already published. Drafts and scheduled posts cannot be boosted yet.
- Choose a goal, a daily budget and how many days to run. The budget per day must be at least 1 in your ad account currency, and the run time is 1 to 90 days.
- Check the spend box, which shows the total before you start.
- Start the boost, or choose Save paused to keep it ready without spending anything.
What it costs in Infinall: Save paused is free. A live boost uses 2 credits a month, the same as any live ad, and paused, ended and deleted boosts are free. The ad budget itself is charged by the ad platform to your ad account, not by Infinall. Infinall does not buy media for you.
On a team, workspace viewers cannot boost; the app says "Your workspace role does not permit this action (spend)." One click makes one boost, so pressing the button twice does not create two.
Worked example: boosting a launch post
A small skincare brand publishes a carousel announcing a new serum. It gets more comments than their usual posts in the first day, so they decide to boost it.
- Pick the post: the launch carousel, because it already earned engagement for free.
- Pick the goal: website visits, because the post links to the product page.
- Pick the budget: 10 a day in their ad account currency.
- Pick the duration: 7 days, so the total is about 70 before they start. The spend box shows the total so there are no surprises.
- Watch the results: after a few days they compare the boosted post with their organic posts in Analytics, on the Ads tab.
In Infinall, that boost uses 2 credits a month while it is live, and the 70 of ad spend goes to their ad account. If results are weak after a few days, they pause it, which costs nothing, and try a different post or turn the idea into a full ad with new creative.
Tips before you boost
- Fix the caption first. Strangers will read it, so make sure it says what you sell and what to do next.
- Check the creative fits the placement. A boost runs the post as it is, so a crop that works in the profile grid may not work in Stories.
- Start small and short. A few days at a low daily budget tells you whether the post can pull its weight before you spend more.
- Read the results per goal. Likes are a fine result for an engagement boost, but not for a website visit boost.
- Keep the ad rules in mind. Boosted posts go through the same ad review as any other ad, so posts with claims that break ad policies can be rejected.
Frequently asked questions
Is a boosted post an ad?
Yes. A boosted post is paid for through an ad account, goes through ad review and is shown as sponsored or promoted. It is simply an ad whose creative is a post you already published.
Can I boost a post for free?
No. Boosting always spends ad budget on the platform. In Infinall AI you can set up a boost and save it paused for free, but a live boost spends your budget on the ad platform and uses 2 credits a month in Infinall.
Can I boost a post in Infinall AI on the Free plan?
Boosting needs a connected ad account, and connecting accounts is a Pro feature. Pro is $10 for the first month, then $30 a month or $299 a year. Ad accounts you already connected keep working.
How long can a boost run in Infinall AI?
From 1 to 90 days, with a daily budget of at least 1 in your ad account currency. You can pause it any time, and paused boosts are free.
Does boosting change my original post?
No. Boost post uses the post as it is, so the picture and caption stay the same, and you do not make new creative.
