How to Write a Video Ad Script: 7 Steps and a Template

To write a video ad script, decide the length first, then budget about 15 words for a 6 second ad, 38 for 15 seconds, 75 for 30 seconds and 150 for 60 seconds. Open with a hook in the first 3 to 5 seconds, show one problem and how the product solves it, and end with one clear action. Read it aloud with a timer and cut anything that runs over.

A video ad script is the plan for what the viewer hears and sees, line by line, from the first second to the call to action. Most weak video ads fail at the script stage: they start with a logo, try to say five things, or run longer than the slot. A good script is short, built around one idea and written to be spoken, not read. This guide gives a tool-neutral method and a simple template you can use for any video ad, whether you film it yourself, hire a creator or generate it. It then shows how to draft and voice the script in Infinall AI, which has a script writer on the Free plan.

How to Write a Video Ad Script: 7 Steps and a Template

  1. Fix the length and the placement

Decide where the ad will run and how long it is before you write a word. A short hook ad, a 15 second feed ad and a 60 second explainer need different scripts, not one script cut down. Check the placement's limits too: an Instagram story video can be 3 to 60 seconds long, and a TikTok in-feed ad can run up to 10 minutes, but shorter is easier to hold attention with.

  2. Set a word budget

Spoken ad copy has a natural pace, so length limits words. As a working target, aim for about 15 words for 6 seconds, 38 for 15 seconds, 75 for 30 seconds and 150 for 60 seconds. Writing to a budget forces you to cut weak lines early instead of rushing the voiceover later.

  3. Pick one viewer and one message

Write one sentence that says who the ad is for and the single thing they should remember. If you have three benefits, make three ads. One message per script is easier to test, because you can tell which idea worked.

  4. Write the hook for the first 3 to 5 seconds

The opening line has to work on its own, because many viewers scroll away before the rest. Lead with the problem, a surprising result, a direct question or the product in use, not a greeting or a logo. Write three or four hooks for the same script so you can test them against each other.

  5. Write the middle: problem, product, proof

Show the problem in the viewer's words, then show the product solving it. Add one concrete detail that makes it believable, such as what is in the box, how long a task takes or what a customer said, but only if it is true. Avoid lists of features: one clear picture beats five claims.

  6. End with one action

Close with a single next step the viewer can take: shop now, book a demo, download the app, claim the offer. Say it out loud and show it on screen. Two calls to action compete with each other and usually weaken both.

  7. Add the visual column and read it aloud

Put the script in two columns: what is said and what is shown. Add on-screen text for the key line, because many people watch with the sound off. Then read the whole script aloud with a timer, cut any line that does not earn its seconds, and check that it still makes sense without sound.

How to write a video ad script in Infinall AI

Infinall AI has a script writer that turns a short brief into ad copy you can read out loud, and it is open on both Free and Pro. On Home, choose Audio, keep the mode on Voice over, open Settings and choose Write the script for me. In the Brief box, say what the ad is about and who it is for (up to 2000 characters). Pick a length, 6s, 15s, 30s or 60s, and a tone: confident, friendly, urgent, calm or playful. Then choose Write it. The script replaces the words in your box, so you can edit it and send it as a voiceover in the same place. If you pick a saved brand in the brand chip, the script uses that brand's name, tone, audience and approved claims. You can also choose Write a script from the mode chip, which puts the script on your canvas as a Script card with a Copy button. Writing uses credits, and nothing is spoken until you send the script as a voiceover. If you work on Pro and make the video in Infinall too, the storyboard shows each scene with its spoken line, and you can edit and approve the script before you see the price.

Common mistakes

Starting with the brand name or a slow intro, so the hook arrives after the viewer has gone. Writing for the eye instead of the ear: long sentences, brackets and numbers that are hard to say. Packing in every feature, which leaves no time to show any of them. Writing a 30 second script and expecting it to work cut down to 6 seconds. Ending without a clear action, or with two. Making claims you cannot back up: keep every fact in the script true and check the ad platform's policies before you publish. Skipping the read-aloud test, which is the fastest way to find lines that run long or sound unnatural.

Free vs Pro for script work

On the Free plan you get 1,000 credits every month with no card, which covers the script writer and voiceovers with 54 voices across 29 languages. Pro is $10 for the first month, then $30 a month or $299 a year (India: Rs 999 for the first month, then Rs 2,899 a month or Rs 33,999 a year), and gives 3,000 credits a month. Pro adds video, where a video can be 1 to 180 seconds long, premium voices and voice cloning. If you only need the words, a doc and a timer are enough, and the Free plan covers a written draft and a voiceover to test how it sounds.

Frequently asked questions

How many words is a 30 second video ad script?

About 75 words is a good target for a 30 second ad read at a natural pace. Read it aloud with a timer, because pauses, music and on-screen moments use time too.

What is a simple video script template?

Hook, problem, product solving it, proof, call to action. Write it in two columns, what is said and what is shown, and fit it to the word budget for your ad length.

Is writing a video game script the same?

No. A video game script covers characters, branching dialogue and story, which is a different craft. This guide is about short video ads that sell a product or service.

Can Infinall AI write the script for me on the Free plan?

Yes. The script writer is open on Free and Pro. It uses credits, and you can edit the result before you turn it into a voiceover.

Does the script writer make the voiceover too?

No. It only writes text. Nothing is spoken until you pick a voice and send the script as a voiceover.
