A Performance Max asset group mixes images, logos, text and video, and Google assembles ads from them across its inventory. Each asset type has its own shape, minimum size, file limit and count. This guide lists the specs from Google Ads Help as they stood when we checked, then walks through making a set of assets that passes them. Check the image shape first: Google judges the ratio, so a picture with the right file size but the wrong shape still will not fit the slot.

Performance Max Asset Specs: Image Sizes, Text Limits and Video
List the slots you need to fill
Start from the table, not from the pictures you happen to have. The required images are one horizontal 1.91:1 image and one square 1:1 image, plus a square logo, but Google recommends 4 or more of each image shape. Write down the counts so you know how many pictures, headlines and descriptions to prepare before you open any design tool.
Make each image at the recommended size
Build the horizontal image at 1200 x 628 pixels and the square image at 1200 x 1200. If you add the optional vertical image, use 960 x 1200. Do not stretch one picture to fit another shape: crop or recompose it. Keep the important content in the center 80% of the image, which Google describes as the safe area that will not be cut off on different screens.
Prepare the logos
Export a square logo at 1200 x 1200 and, if you have one, a 4:1 horizontal logo at 1200 x 300. Google notes that logos with a transparent background may be shown on a white background in most ads, so avoid a mainly white logo on a transparent background and check that the logo is sharp, not blurry.
Write the text to the character limits
Write up to 15 headlines of 30 characters or fewer, with at least one of 15 characters or less. Add 1 to 5 long headlines and 2 to 5 descriptions, each up to 90 characters, and a business name of up to 25 characters. In Korean, Japanese or Chinese each character counts as 2 towards the limit.
Add video in all three shapes
Upload videos of 10 seconds or more in horizontal 16:9, square 1:1 and vertical 9:16. Google says that to get Excellent Ad Strength and stop the system from auto-generating videos, you need your own videos in all three formats.
Check every file, then use a tool where it helps
Before uploading, confirm each image is a JPG or PNG under 5 MB and the right shape. The free All-in-One Ad Resizer and Aspect Ratio Calculator help with sizing, and the Google Ads Character Counter checks the 30, 90 and 15 character limits. Infinall AI can make new images in 1.91:1, 1:1 and 4:5, and motion videos in 16:9, 1:1 and 9:16, from your saved brand.
Performance Max sizes and dimensions at a glance
If you only remember three numbers, make them 1200 x 628 for the horizontal image, 1200 x 1200 for the square image and the square logo, and 5 MB for any image file. The minimums are much smaller (600 x 314 for horizontal and 300 x 300 for square), but an image near the minimum leaves little room for Google to place it on larger screens. Working at the recommended size and saving as JPG or PNG covers most placements.
The optional shapes are the vertical 4:5 image at 960 x 1200 and the 4:1 horizontal logo at 1200 x 300. They are not required to publish, but Google's table recommends 2 or more vertical images and says optional images help your campaign reach excellent ad strength.
Performance Max image size: file type and file weight
Google Ads Help lists the image file limit two ways: 5120 KB in the table and a maximum of 5 MB in the note, which is the same limit. Supported types are JPG and PNG. That is far looser than the 150 KB limit for uploaded image display ads, so a Performance Max image rarely needs heavy compression. Do not reuse a tiny display banner as a Performance Max image: it will be the wrong shape and much smaller than recommended.
Text assets: what the limits mean in practice
Headlines are short, so write several angles rather than one long sentence cut down: a product name, a benefit, an offer, a question. Google recommends 11 or more of the 15 allowed headlines. Long headlines can run to 90 characters, and Google suggests making them at least 30, so they read as a full line. The business name must match your domain name or legally verified business name and should not contain extra symbols or promotional text.
If Final URL expansion is on, Google may swap in a more relevant landing page and generate its own headline and description, so keep your landing pages accurate.
Where Infinall AI fits, and where it does not
Infinall AI makes images, motion videos and copy from your saved brand, so one prompt can produce a set of pictures in your colours with your logo. The image settings include 1.91:1, 1:1 and 4:5 tiles, and Motion videos can be 16:9, 1:1 or 9:16 with lengths from 10 to 60 seconds. Resize with Crop or Fit is free and accepts 64 to 4096 pixels, which covers every Performance Max size above.
Infinall does not build or run your Performance Max campaign and does not buy media for you. You upload the finished assets in Google Ads yourself. If you already have a designer and a video team, the free sizing tools may be all you need. The free plan gives 1,000 credits every month with no card.
Frequently asked questions
What is the recommended Performance Max image size?
Google recommends 1200 x 628 for the horizontal 1.91:1 image and 1200 x 1200 for the square 1:1 image. The optional vertical 4:5 image is 960 x 1200.
What is the maximum file size for Performance Max images?
Images must be JPG or PNG with a maximum size of 5 MB, shown as 5120 KB in Google's table.
How many headlines does Performance Max need?
A minimum of 3 and a maximum of 15, each up to 30 characters. Google recommends 11 or more, with at least one of 15 characters or less.
Do I have to add a video to Performance Max?
No, video is not required. If you do not add one, Google may auto-generate videos from your other assets. To prevent that, upload your own videos of 10 seconds or more in horizontal, square and vertical formats.
Can I use a transparent PNG logo?
You can, but Google says transparent logos may be shown on a white background in most ads, so avoid a mostly white logo on a transparent background.
