X Post Character Limit: 280 Characters and How X Counts Them
The X post character limit is 280 characters, counted with weights. Latin letters, spaces and punctuation count as 1 each, while every emoji, Chinese, Japanese and Korean character, and most other Unicode characters count as 2. Any link counts as 23 characters however long it is, and photos or videos attached in the X apps count as 0.

Most people hit the X post character limit with a post that looks short. The reason is that X does not count characters one by one: it gives each character a weight, swaps every link for a fixed-length short link and ignores some text in replies. This guide sets out the counting rules from X's own developer documentation, shows how to write a post that fits on the first try, and explains what to do when your message needs more room than one post gives you.
| What you type | How it counts | What it means for your post |
|---|---|---|
| Latin letters, numbers, spaces, punctuation | 1 each | A plain English post can use all 280 characters. |
| Any emoji, including skin tones and joined sequences | 2 each | A post of only emoji holds up to 140 emojis. Joined family emoji still count as 2. |
| Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters | 2 each | A post in these scripts holds about half as many characters. |
| Other Unicode characters | 2 by default | Some symbols and scripts take 2, so count before posting. |
| Any valid link | 23, whatever its length | X wraps every link in its t.co short link. |
| Hashtags | Counted normally, the # plus the tag text | Each hashtag uses space from your 280. |
| @mentions added automatically at the start of a reply | Not counted | Replying in a long thread does not eat your space. |
| @mentions you type yourself | Counted normally | Tagging people by hand uses characters. |
| Photos, a GIF or a video attached in the X apps | 0 | Media is free in the count. A post takes up to 4 photos, 1 GIF or 1 video. |
X Post Character Limit: 280 Characters and How X Counts Them
Write the core message first
Start with the one sentence your reader must see, then add detail. With 280 characters there is no room for a slow opening, so put the offer, the news or the question at the start.
Count links as 23, not their real length
Paste your full link if you like. X will show a short t.co link and count it as 23 characters, so a long tracking link costs the same as a short one. Do not shorten links by hand just to save characters.
Check emoji, symbols and non-Latin text
Each emoji counts as 2. So do Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters and most other Unicode characters. If your post is close to the limit, swap a few emoji for words or move them to the end.
Move extra detail into media or a reply
Attached photos, a GIF or a video count as 0 characters, and you can add up to 4 photos or 1 video. Put a price list, a chart or a long quote into an image, or continue in a reply, where the automatic @mentions at the start do not count.
Run the post through a weighted counter
A normal word counter counts every character as 1 and misses the link and emoji rules. Paste the post into the free X Post Character Counter, which checks it against 280 weighted characters with links at 23 and emoji at 2, before you publish or schedule it.
Does the X post character limit count spaces?
Yes. Spaces and line breaks are characters, and a space counts as 1, the same as a letter. So the X post character limit with spaces is the same 280 you see everywhere: there is no separate count without spaces. If you are trimming a post, removing double spaces and extra blank lines is an easy way to win back a few characters without changing the wording.
Why a post can be too long when it looks short
Three things catch people out:
- Emoji. Every emoji counts as 2, even a single smiley. A family emoji built from several people joined together still counts as 2, because the joining characters are not counted.
- Non-Latin text. Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters count as 2, and so do other Unicode characters outside the ranges X weights as 1. A post written in those scripts fits fewer characters than an English post, so check it with a weighted counter.
- Text that looks the same but is built differently. X counts text after Unicode Normalization Form C (NFC), so an accented letter typed as one character or as a letter plus an accent mark counts the same.
Links work the other way: a very long link costs only 23 characters, so a post with a long URL can fit even when it looks too long in your notes app.
Other X text limits marketers run into
The 280-character limit is for the post text. If you run video ads on X, the title that appears under the video has its own limit of 70 characters. Images you attach have file limits too: X's media guidance lists JPG, PNG, GIF and WEBP images up to 5 MB, and animated GIFs up to 15 MB. If you need image sizes for X ad cards, see our guide to X ad image size.
Writing X posts in Infinall AI
Infinall AI can help you write and plan X posts. Ask Infinall Chat for a short version of a longer caption, using your saved brand voice, then add the post to the calendar in the Social Hub. The composer counts characters for each platform, uses a 280-character limit for X, warns you when you go over and blocks scheduling until the X version fits. You can keep one shared caption for every platform or switch off Write once for all and write a shorter X version.
Be aware of one limit: X cannot be connected as a social account yet. It shows as Soon, so X posts in the calendar stay as reminders and you post them yourself when the reminder arrives. Planning and scheduling are free and use no credits. The free plan gives 1,000 credits every month with no card, which covers chat answers and images to attach.
Frequently asked questions
What is the character limit for a post on X?
A standard post on X can contain up to 280 characters, counted with weights. Most letters, numbers and spaces count as 1, emoji and many non-Latin characters count as 2, and every link counts as 23.
Do spaces count toward the X character limit?
Yes. A space counts as 1 character, like a letter or a comma. Line breaks count too.
How many emoji can I put in one X post?
Up to 140, because each emoji counts as 2 characters. Emoji with skin tones or several joined people still count as 2 each.
Do photos and videos count toward the 280 characters?
No. Media attached through X's own apps counts as 0 characters. A post can carry up to 4 photos, 1 animated GIF or 1 video.
Do @mentions count in replies?
The @mentions X adds automatically at the start of a reply do not count. Any @mention you type yourself counts normally, and so do hashtags.
Can Infinall AI publish my X posts automatically?
Not yet. X shows as Soon in the account list, so X posts in the Infinall calendar stay as reminders and you post them yourself. The composer still checks your X caption against 280 characters.
