What Is a Voiceover? Meaning, Types and a Worked Example

A voiceover is a spoken track you hear over a video, slideshow or ad while the speaker stays off screen. It explains, sells or tells a story to match the pictures. A voiceover can be recorded by a person, called a voiceover artist, or made from a written script with an AI voice.

What a voiceover means

A voiceover is narration that sits on top of pictures. The viewer hears the voice but does not see the person speaking. That is the difference from a talking-head video or an on-camera presenter, where the speaker is in the shot.

You hear voiceovers everywhere: the narrator of a documentary, the voice that reads the offer at the end of a TV ad, the person explaining each step of a product demo, the narration on a training slide deck and the voice telling a story over a short social clip.

In marketing, the voiceover does a specific job. Pictures show the product, and the voice carries the message the pictures cannot: the benefit, the price, the offer and the call to action. Many people watch social video with the sound off, so a voiceover usually works best alongside on-screen text or captions rather than instead of them.

Common types of voiceover

Voiceovers are usually grouped by where they are used:

  • Commercial or ad voiceover: a short script that sells a product, often ending with a call to action.
  • Explainer voiceover: walks the viewer through how something works, common for software demos and onboarding videos.
  • Narration: tells a longer story, as in documentaries, audiobooks and brand films.
  • E-learning and presentation voiceover: narration recorded over slides, such as a PowerPoint deck shared as a video or a self-paced course.
  • Character voice: a voice for an animated character or a game.
  • Dubbing: replacing the original speech in a video with speech in another language.

The type changes how the script is written. An ad needs a hook in the first line and a clear ask at the end. An explainer needs short, plain steps. A narration can take its time.

What a voiceover artist does, and what a voiceover reel is

A voiceover artist, also called a voice actor, is the person who reads the script. Good voiceover work is more than reading aloud: the artist picks the tone, the pace, where to pause and which words to stress, so the message lands the way the brand wants.

A voiceover reel, or demo reel, is a short sample of an artist's work. It strings together clips in different styles, such as an upbeat ad read, a calm explainer and a character voice, so a client can hear the range before hiring. If you are hiring an artist, the reel is the first thing to ask for. If you are an artist, the reel is your main sales tool.

A voiceover for PowerPoint is simply narration recorded for each slide of a presentation, so the deck can play on its own as a talk or a video. The same writing rules apply: one idea per slide, short sentences, and timing that matches what is on screen.

How a voiceover is made, step by step

The process is the same whether a person or an AI voice does the reading:

  1. Decide the job and the length. A short ad, a product demo and a slide deck all need different scripts.
  2. Write the script for the ear, not the eye: short sentences, everyday words, and numbers written the way they are said.
  3. Read it out loud once yourself and cut anything that makes you stumble.
  4. Pick the voice: gender, age, accent, language and tone that fit the brand and the audience.
  5. Record or generate the voiceover, and make more than one take so you can choose.
  6. Check names, prices and product terms. These are the words a reader or a voice most often gets wrong.
  7. Mix the voice over the video with any music kept quieter than the speech, then add captions for viewers who watch without sound.

Recording a human artist gives you the most control over performance. An AI voice is faster and cheaper to redo, which helps when you test several scripts or need the same ad in many languages.

Worked example: a voiceover for a short product ad

Say you sell a reusable water bottle and want a voiceover for a short Instagram ad.

Start with the script. A simple structure works: a hook ("Still buying plastic bottles every week?"), the benefit ("This one keeps water cold all day and goes in your bag"), and the ask ("Tap the link to order yours"). Read it aloud and trim it until it fits the length of the video.

In Infinall AI, open Audio and paste the script, or use Write the script for me: describe the ad in a few words, pick a length and a tone, and edit the script it writes. Pick a voice, set the speed, and make up to 3 takes. Each take lands on your canvas as a player you can play, download and reuse. If the voice is tagged EMOTIONS, you can pick a mood for the whole read or type tags such as [excited] or [pause 1s] inside the script. Tags are not spoken, so they are not charged.

Use Compare voices to hear the same line in several voices before you choose. If you sell in more than one market, Translate & speak makes the script in up to 10 languages at once, each charged separately.

Making a voiceover in Infinall AI: plans, cost and limits

Audio mode reads your script out loud in the voice you pick, on Free and Pro. Free accounts can use 54 voices across 29 languages. Pro adds 20 premium English voices and voices you clone yourself. Cloning your own voice is Pro only, and you must confirm the voice is yours.

A voiceover uses credits and is charged on the characters spoken. Every take is charged, the finished take card shows what it cost, and a voiceover that fails is not charged. One script can be up to 5000 characters, which is roughly five minutes of speech. Two speakers reads at most two voices.

If you want the voice inside a video rather than as a separate track, ask for a voiceover in your Motion prompt and Motion adds it, on Free and Pro. Motion has no voice picker, so use Audio mode when you need to choose the exact voice. Generated audio can be used commercially by the account that made it.

The free plan gives 1,000 credits every month with no card. Pro costs $10 for the first month, then $30 a month or $299 a year (India: Rs 999 first month, then Rs 2,899 a month or Rs 33,999 a year), with 3,000 credits a month. One credit is one US cent.

Human voiceover artist or AI voice: how to choose

Hire a human voiceover artist when the performance is the product: a brand film, a character, an audiobook, or a flagship TV ad where every pause matters. An experienced artist will give you a read that no settings panel can match, and can take direction live.

Use an AI voice when you need speed and volume: many short social ads, quick edits to a price or offer, versions in several languages, or a first draft to test a script before you pay for a studio session. Re-making a take uses credits instead of booking another studio session.

Many teams use both: AI voices to test scripts and run everyday ads, and a human artist for the few pieces that carry the brand.
