What Is AI Video Editing? How It Works, With a Worked Example

AI video editing is video editing where software does the slow, repetitive jobs for you: cutting silent gaps, finding the best moments, writing captions from speech, reframing for a new screen shape and removing backgrounds. You still decide the story and check every cut. In some editors, including Infinall AI, you can also describe a change in plain words and the AI makes it on the timeline.

What AI video editing means

Traditional video editing is manual. You scrub through footage, find the parts worth keeping, cut out the pauses, type captions line by line and rebuild the same video again for each screen shape. AI video editing hands those tasks to software that can listen to the sound, look at the picture and act on the timeline.

It is not the same as AI video generation. A video generator makes new footage from a text prompt. An AI video editor works on footage you already have: your product demo, a talking-head clip, a webinar recording or a phone video. Many tools now do both, so it helps to know which job you need before you pick one.

AI assisted video editing is the most common form. The AI suggests or makes a change, and a person reviews it. The editor stays a normal timeline editor, so you can undo, trim or redo anything the AI did.

What AI video editing software can do

Most AI video editors offer some mix of these jobs:

  • Silence removal: find quiet gaps in the sound and cut them out, so a rambling recording becomes tight.
  • Highlight finding: score the clip for loud, lively moments and pull out the best few.
  • Automatic captions: listen to speech and turn it into timed subtitles you can style and edit.
  • Reframing: change a wide video into a tall or square one for Reels, Shorts or a feed post.
  • Background removal: blur, replace or remove the background behind a person.
  • Beat sync: cut a video to the beat of a music track.
  • Sound cleanup: reduce noise and lower music when someone speaks.
  • Edit by description: type what you want, such as trimming the end of a clip, and the AI makes the edit.

Some of these run on your own computer and some send work to an AI model on a server. That difference matters for cost and privacy, so check where each tool runs before you rely on it.

How AI video editing works, step by step

The workflow is the same in almost any AI video editor:

  1. Import your footage, music and logo into the project.
  2. Run the clean-up tools first: cut silence and clean up the dialogue, so every later step works on tighter footage.
  3. Pick the moments that matter, either by hand or with a highlight finder.
  4. Add captions from speech, then read them and fix names, prices and product terms. Speech recognition gets these wrong most often.
  5. Reframe the finished cut for each platform you post to.
  6. Add music, text and colour, then export one file per platform.

The AI saves time in steps 2, 4 and 5. Steps 3 and 6 are where your judgment still makes the video work.

Worked example: a product demo turned into a short social clip

Say you recorded a talking-head product demo on a laptop webcam, with a few long pauses, and you want a short vertical clip for Instagram Reels.

In the Infinall AI Editor you would import the recording, select the clip and open Auto Cut Silence. Click Analyze, then Cut N to remove the quiet gaps. Next, open Local Highlights from the Effects view, click Find Highlights and then Apply N Highlights to keep the liveliest moments. Make subtitles from the speech in one of six animated looks, then read every caption line and fix any product names. Open Auto Reframe, pick the Instagram Reels preset and click Analyze & Reframe to resize the project. Finally, use Quick Dialogue Cleanup for the sound and export.

Every step in that example runs in your browser and uses no credits. If you then typed a change into the AI Editor chat, such as trimming time off the end, that request would use credits, and one chat request stops after 100 credits.

AI video editing in Infinall AI

The Infinall AI Editor is a video editor in your browser at /ai-editor, open on Free and Pro. You cut clips on a timeline, add text and captions, effects, transitions, colour grading and audio, and export a finished video.

Its AI tools are the AI Editor chat, which makes edits from your description, and AI Gen, which makes a picture from a description. Turn on Explain first in AI settings and the chat tells you its plan without changing anything. The free tools are Auto Cut Silence, Local Highlights, Beat-Synced Auto-Edit, Auto Reframe, Background Removal and Quick Actions (Remove Background, Quick Dialogue Cleanup and Auto-Color). Editing, saving, exporting and those free tools never use credits. The chat and the picture maker use credits, and the picture maker shows an estimate on its button.

Limits to know: the editor works on a computer only and needs a screen at least 1024 pixels wide. A single media file can be up to 500 MB. In this version, Auto Reframe resizes the whole project to the size you pick, and its tracking sliders do not change the result yet. Browser export over 120 seconds is reduced to 1920x1080.

The free plan gives 1,000 credits every month with no card. Pro costs $10 for the first month, then $30 a month or $299 a year, with 3,000 credits a month.

When AI video editing is the right choice, and when it is not

AI editing is a good fit when you have a lot of talking-head, demo, webinar or interview footage and you need many short cuts from it, often in several screen shapes. It is also a good fit when nobody on the team is a trained editor.

It is a weaker fit for films and ads that depend on careful pacing, story and colour, where an experienced editor will make better calls than any automatic tool. It also struggles with footage that has little speech or sound, because silence removal, highlight finding and captions all depend on the audio track.

If you need to make new footage rather than edit what you have, look at an AI video generator or motion graphics instead. In Infinall AI, Motion makes short animated videos from a prompt on Free and Pro, and Video is a Pro feature.

Frequently asked questions

What is AI video editing software?

It is video editing software with tools that use AI to do slow jobs for you, such as cutting silence, finding highlights, making captions from speech, reframing and removing backgrounds. You still review and adjust the result on a normal timeline.

What is an AI video editor?

An AI video editor is an editing app that can act on your footage by itself or from a plain-language request. The Infinall AI Editor, for example, has a chat where you describe a change and the AI makes it on the timeline, plus free tools that run in your browser.

What is AI assisted video editing?

It means the AI suggests or makes edits and a person checks them. In the Infinall AI Editor you can turn on Explain first so the AI tells you its plan without changing anything, and Undo in the chat header takes a change back.

Is AI video editing free in Infinall AI?

Mostly. Editing, saving, exporting and the free tools (Auto Cut Silence, Local Highlights, Beat-Synced Auto-Edit, Auto Reframe, Background Removal and Quick Actions) use no credits. The AI Editor chat and the picture maker use credits. The free plan gives 1,000 credits every month with no card.

Can I use the Infinall AI Editor on my phone?

No. The AI Editor works on a computer only. Phones and tablets see a message to use a computer, and the screen must be at least 1024 pixels wide.
