What Is Motion Graphics? Meaning, Uses and a Worked Example

Motion graphics are animated graphic design: text, shapes, logos, icons and charts that move to explain or sell something, usually in a short video with music or a voiceover. Unlike character animation, they rarely tell a story with characters. They show messages, product points and numbers in motion, as in logo intros, ad bumpers, explainer videos and animated social posts.

What motion graphics means

Motion graphics is graphic design that moves. A designer takes the same parts used in a poster or an ad, such as headlines, shapes, brand colours, a logo and icons, and gives them timing: they slide in, scale up, fade, spin or change into the next scene.

The goal is usually to get a message across fast. A product benefit appears as large text, a price pops onto the screen, a logo builds itself at the end. Because the parts are designed rather than filmed, motion graphics work well when you have no footage at all, or when you need to explain an idea that a camera cannot show, such as how an app works or how money flows through a process.

Most motion graphics are short. Logo stings and ad bumpers last a few seconds, social posts and promos often run under a minute, and explainer videos can be longer.

Motion graphics vs animation vs video editing

Motion graphics animation is one kind of animation, but the two words are not the same. Character animation brings people, animals or creatures to life and tells a story through them, as in a cartoon. Motion graphics focus on design elements and information: words, logos, data and simple shapes.

Motion graphics in video editing means the graphic layers placed on top of or between filmed clips: titles, lower thirds with a speaker's name, animated captions, callouts that point at a product, transitions and end cards. A video editor cuts and arranges footage. A motion graphics designer makes the moving graphics that sit on that footage, or builds a full video from graphics alone.

Many real projects mix all three. A product ad might use filmed shots, edited to music, with motion graphics for the headline, the offer and the logo at the end.

Where motion graphics are used

Common uses for a marketer, founder or agency:

  • Logo intros and outros: a short sting that opens or closes every video.
  • Ad bumpers: a very short ad that shows one message and the brand.
  • Product reveals and promos: the product name, key benefits and an offer, shown as animated text and shapes.
  • Explainer videos: a step by step story of how a product or service works.
  • Animated social posts: a moving version of a feed post or story, made in the shape the platform wants.
  • Titles, lower thirds and captions in filmed videos such as interviews, webinars and tutorials.
  • Data and charts that build up on screen, for reports and presentations.

Motion is useful in feeds because it gives the viewer something to watch. Keep the main message readable in the first seconds, and make sure the video still works with the sound off.

What a motion graphics designer does

A motion graphics designer plans and builds these videos. The work usually runs in this order:

  1. Brief: agree the message, the audience, the length, the shape (for example wide 16:9 or tall 9:16) and where the video will run.
  2. Script: write the words that will appear on screen and, if needed, the voiceover.
  3. Storyboard: sketch each scene, with the text, the visuals and the transition to the next scene.
  4. Design frames: make still versions of the key scenes in the brand's colours and fonts.
  5. Animate: give every element its timing and movement, then add transitions between scenes.
  6. Sound: add music, a voiceover and sound effects, and line up the motion with the beat or the voice.
  7. Export: render the video file and make versions in each shape needed.

Designers often use desktop animation and video software for this. The skills that matter most are layout, typography, timing and knowing when to stop adding movement.

Worked example: a short product reveal for Reels

Say you sell a reusable water bottle and want a short tall video for Instagram Reels, with no filmed footage.

A plan anyone can follow, in any tool:

  • Scene 1: the product name slides in on the brand colour background.
  • Scene 2: three benefits appear one at a time as large text, each with a simple icon.
  • Scene 3: the offer appears in a bold box.
  • Scene 4: the logo end card with the website address.

Write the plan as a short brief before you open any software: the scenes, the exact words on screen, the transitions, the length and the shape. For example: "15 s, 9:16, 4 text scenes plus logo end card, upbeat music."

In Infinall AI you can type that brief into the Motion box. Pick your brand with Select brand so the video can use your name, colours, logo, tagline and approved claims, choose 9:16 and 15s (or leave both on Auto and put them in the prompt), and click Generate motion video. You watch the build on the canvas and in the chat. When the card says Video ready, click Export MP4 and download the file, or add it to the calendar to schedule it as a post. If you want a different version, send a new prompt: each prompt makes a new video next to the first one, so you keep both.

Making motion graphics in Infinall AI

Motion in Infinall AI makes short animated videos from a text prompt: moving text, logos and scenes, ready to export as an MP4. You describe the scenes, the words on screen and the timing, and Infinall AI designs each scene, checks the frames and gives you a video. On Home, four Start with cards fill in a ready-made prompt: Product reveal, Promo, Logo sting and Ad bumper.

What to know before you start:

  • Motion is open on Free and Pro, and every account can pick the quality levels Standard, Pro and Max. The quality level called Pro is not the Pro plan.
  • Videos run from 10 to 60 seconds when you pick a length yourself.
  • Shapes are Auto, 16:9, 1:1, 9:16 and 4:5.
  • A plain prompt makes a silent video. Ask for a voiceover or music in your prompt to add sound. There is no voice or track picker.
  • The Motion box has no attach button today. Your logo and colours come in through your saved brand.
  • There is no in-place edit of a finished video. Comment pins and the Edit toolbar are for images only.

Cost: Motion uses credits and is charged on what the video uses, so longer videos cost more. The quality menu shows an estimate, not a fixed price. Exporting the MP4 and downloading are free. The free plan gives 1,000 credits every month with no card. Pro costs $10 for the first month, then $30 a month or $299 a year, with 3,000 credits a month.

Where a designer is better: if you need precise frame by frame control, complex character animation, custom illustration or a long explainer, a motion graphics designer with desktop software will give you more control than a prompt.

Frequently asked questions

What is motion graphics in video editing?

It is the moving graphic layer in an edited video: titles, lower thirds, animated captions, callouts, transitions and end cards. The editor cuts the footage, and the motion graphics add text and design on top of it or between clips.

What is motion graphics animation?

It is animation of design elements such as text, shapes, logos, icons and charts, rather than characters. It is used to explain an idea or show a message, for example in an explainer video, a logo intro or an animated ad.

What is a motion graphics designer?

A motion graphics designer plans and builds animated graphics: they write or take the script, storyboard the scenes, design frames in the brand style, animate them, add sound and export the video in each shape needed.

Can I make motion graphics without design skills?

Yes, for short marketing videos. In Infinall AI you describe the scenes, the words on screen and the length in the Motion box, and it builds the video. Motion is open on the free plan, which gives 1,000 credits every month with no card.

How long can a motion video in Infinall AI be?

From 10 to 60 seconds when you pick a length yourself. You can also leave Length on Auto and say the length in your prompt.

Do motion videos in Infinall AI have sound?

Only if you ask. A plain prompt makes a silent video. Ask for a voiceover or music in your prompt and Motion adds it. The music is a track from a built-in library, cut to the length of your video.
