What Is Video Dubbing? Meaning, AI Dubbing and How It Works
Video dubbing replaces the spoken audio in a video with a new voice track, usually in another language, so viewers hear the message in their own language instead of reading subtitles. AI video dubbing does this with software: it transcribes the speech, translates it and speaks it again in a generated or cloned voice, sometimes with lip sync.

| Method | What the viewer gets | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Subtitles | Original voice plus translated text | Feed videos watched on mute | Viewers must read |
| Studio dubbing | New voice actors in the new language | Film, TV and long-form content | Cost and time for every language |
| AI dubbing | Machine translated speech in a synthetic or cloned voice | Ads, tutorials and founder videos at scale | Translation errors, so have a native speaker check |
| New voiceover | Fresh narration over the same footage | Videos with no one speaking on camera | Does not replace speech already in the video |
What video dubbing means
To dub a video is to swap its original speech for a new spoken track. The pictures stay the same, but the words the audience hears change. Most of the time the new track is a translation, so a product demo recorded in English can be watched in Hindi, Spanish or Tamil with the narration in that language.
Dubbing is different from subtitles. Subtitles keep the original voice and add translated text on screen, which means the viewer has to read. Dubbing changes what the viewer hears, so the video works for people watching with the sound on who would rather listen than read. It is also different from a plain voiceover, where a narrator speaks over footage that never had speech in it. A voiceover is new narration. A dub replaces speech that was already there.
How traditional dubbing works
Studio dubbing for film and TV follows the same basic steps, whoever does them:
- Transcribe: write down every line spoken in the original, with timings.
- Translate and adapt: rewrite the lines in the new language so they mean the same thing and fit roughly the same length, since a translated sentence that runs long will spill past the speaker's lips.
- Cast and record: voice actors read the new lines in a studio, matching pace and emotion to the picture.
- Mix: the new voices are placed on the timeline and mixed with the original music and sound effects.
- Check: a native speaker watches the result for meaning, timing and tone.
This gives the most natural result, but every language needs its own actors, studio time and edit, so it is usually saved for long-form or high-budget work.
What AI video dubbing is
AI video dubbing runs the same steps with software. An AI model transcribes the speech, translates it, and speaks the translation with a synthetic voice. Some tools go further: they clone the original speaker's voice so the dub still sounds like the same person, and they adjust the mouth movements on screen so the lips match the new words (lip sync).
The benefit for marketers is speed and reach. One ad, one founder video or one tutorial can be turned into several language versions without booking voice talent for each. The trade-off is quality control. Machine translation can miss idioms, product names and slang, and a synthetic voice can sound flat on emotional lines. Treat an AI dub as a strong first draft and have a native speaker watch it before it runs as a paid ad.
Dubbing, subtitles or a new voiceover: how to choose
Pick the method by how people watch and what you already have.
- Use subtitles when most viewers watch on mute in a feed, when the original speaker's own voice matters, or when you want the cheapest option. You can add both: dub the audio and keep captions for silent viewing.
- Use dubbing when a real person speaks on camera and you want viewers in another language to hear them, for example a founder explainer, a testimonial or a webinar clip.
- Use a fresh voiceover when the video has no one speaking on camera, such as a product montage or a motion graphics ad. It is simpler to write a script in each language and record narration over the same footage than to dub.
If your video is going to India and the US, a common split is an English master, then Hindi and one or two regional language versions for the Indian audience.
Worked example: one ad in three languages
Say a skincare brand has a 30 second English video ad with the founder speaking to camera, and wants Hindi and Tamil versions for Indian buyers.
- Clean up the master first. Fix the English script and the edit, because every mistake gets copied into every language.
- Write down the script and mark product names, prices and offers that must not be translated or must be changed per market.
- Dub the video into Hindi, then into Tamil. With an AI tool this is one upload and one language choice per version.
- Have a Hindi speaker and a Tamil speaker watch each version. Check that the offer, the price and the call to action are right, and that the tone sounds like the brand.
- Add captions in each language for people watching on mute.
- Run each language as its own ad set so you can see which version performs.
The same plan works for a US to Spanish version or any other pair of languages.
