YouTube Skippable In-Stream Ad Length: Limits and Best Length
YouTube skippable in-stream ads have no maximum length, and Google Ads recommends keeping them under 3 minutes. Viewers can skip the ad after 5 seconds. With CPV bidding you pay when someone watches 30 seconds, the whole ad if it is shorter than 30 seconds, or interacts with it, whichever comes first.

Skippable in-stream ads are the most flexible YouTube format on length: Google sets no upper limit. That freedom is also the trap, because the viewer can leave after 5 seconds. This guide lists the length rules Google publishes for skippable in-stream ads, how the length affects what you pay, how the format compares with non-skippable and bumper ads, and a simple way to make several lengths from one video.
| Format | Can viewers skip? | Length rule | How you pay |
|---|---|---|---|
| Skippable in-stream | Yes, after 5 seconds | No max length, under 3 minutes recommended | CPV: when a viewer watches 30 seconds (or the whole ad if shorter) or interacts. Target CPM, Target CPA and Maximize conversions: on impressions |
| Non-skippable in-stream | No | 60 seconds or shorter; 15 to 60 seconds max depending on the campaign subtype | Target CPM, paid on impressions |
| Bumper ad | No | Between 5 and 6 seconds | Target CPM, paid on impressions |
| Video in a Demand Gen campaign | Depends on placement | Videos less than 10 seconds cannot serve on YouTube in-stream | Set by the campaign |
YouTube Skippable In-Stream Ad Length: Limits and Best Length
Decide the job of the ad
A skippable ad can tell a longer story, but each viewer decides after 5 seconds whether to stay. Pick one goal, such as a product demo or a sign-up offer, and write down the single message a viewer must get before the skip button appears.
Script the first 5 seconds first
Put the brand, the product and the main promise in the opening seconds, before the viewer can skip. Then plan the rest scene by scene. If the story runs past 3 minutes, cut it down: Google recommends staying under that length.
Plan around the 30 second mark
With CPV bidding you pay when a viewer reaches 30 seconds or the end of a shorter ad, or interacts. Put your call to action before that point so that paying viewers see it, and repeat it near the end for the ones who stay.
Make one master video, then cut versions
Build the full version, then trim shorter cuts from it to test. In Infinall AI, Pro accounts can make a video of 1 to 180 seconds and up to 20 versions at once, and Motion makes videos of 10 to 60 seconds on Free and Pro. Keep every cut at 10 seconds or longer if it will also run in a Demand Gen campaign.
Trim and export
Cut each version to a clean stop on a timeline. The Infinall AI Editor trims clips on a timeline, and exporting from it is free with no credits on both plans.
Upload to YouTube and preview the ad
Google requires video ad content to be hosted on YouTube, so upload each cut to your channel and pick it when you build the ad in Google Ads. Use the free YouTube Ad Mockup to check how your headline and description read before you launch.
Is there a maximum length for skippable in-stream ads?
No. The format comparison on Google Ads Help lists the maximum video length for skippable in-stream ads as no max length, with under 3 minutes recommended. So a 2 minute product walkthrough or a 30 second spot are both allowed. The limit that matters is attention, not a rule: the ad plays before, during or after other videos, and viewers can skip it after 5 seconds. Treat 3 minutes as the upper bound Google suggests, not a target.
How length changes what you pay
With CPV bidding you pay when a viewer watches 30 seconds of your video, the entire video if it is shorter than 30 seconds, or interacts with it, whichever comes first. That has two effects on length:
- An ad of 30 seconds or less is billed only when someone watches to the end or interacts.
- On a longer ad, a viewer who watches 30 seconds is billed even if they leave before your ending, so put the offer and call to action early.
With Target CPM, Target CPA and Maximize conversions bidding you pay based on impressions instead, so the length does not change when you are charged.
Skippable vs non-skippable and bumper ads
Non-skippable in-stream ads are 60 seconds or shorter, and the format table gives the maximum as 15 to 60 seconds depending on the campaign subtype. Bumper ads are non-skippable and last between 5 and 6 seconds. Both use Target CPM bidding. Pick skippable when your story needs more time than 60 seconds or when you only want to pay for viewers who chose to watch. Pick non-skippable or a bumper when the message is short and every viewer must see it. Many advertisers run both: a skippable ad for the full story and a bumper to repeat the brand.
Where skippable in-stream ads appear
Skippable in-stream ads appear on YouTube watch pages, within casual games on YouTube Playables in the YouTube mobile app, and across websites and apps running on Google video partners. Google suggests the format when you have video content you want to promote before, during or after other videos. Plan for a small phone screen as well as a large one: big text, clear sound and a logo that stays on screen.
Campaign objectives and the 10 second rule in Demand Gen
You can run skippable in-stream ads with the Sales, Leads, Website traffic or YouTube reach, views, and engagements objectives, or with a campaign made without a goal's guidance. If you use the same video in a Demand Gen campaign, note that videos less than 10 seconds are ineligible to serve on YouTube in-stream there. A cut of 10 seconds or more keeps that option open.
Making length versions with Infinall AI
Infinall AI helps you make the video files. It does not buy YouTube media for you, and it does not upload ads into Google Ads. On Pro, video length runs from 1 to 180 seconds, each scene is at most 8 seconds, and you can make 1 to 20 versions at once, so one brief can give you a long cut and a short one to test. The video tools describe a hook as 3 to 5 seconds and a short explainer as 30 seconds or less, which lines up with the skip button and the CPV billing point. On the Free plan, with 1,000 credits a month and no card, Motion makes videos of 10 to 60 seconds, and the AI Editor trims and exports any clip for free. Pro is $10 for the first month, then $30 a month or $299 a year, with 3,000 credits a month.
